ÌýAs a Band 6 you will be required to co-ordinate and manage a busy and demanding ward on a daily basis, be the first line support for junior staff and manage your own team of staff, including sickness and absence management, carrying out personal development reviews and managing off duty requirements.Ìý

Experience on an acute medical ward is required but oncology experience is not, we are here to help you develop in the role.

Main duties of the job

To work collaboratively with and provide support to the unit managers. To take responsibility for the management of the department, including patient care and skill mix, and the development and support of the nursing staff in the absence of the ward manager.

To demonstrate initiative and vision in continuing to move the service forward whilst assisting in implementing service changes / developments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

  1. To deputise for and support the Ward Manager
  2. Provide management support for the junior staff and act as mentor to designated staff
  3. Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records
  4. To organise daily work schedule ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs
  5. To have an awareness of the staff and non staff budget
  6. Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
  7. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately
  8. Ensure all trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary
  9. Regularly liaise and report to Department Manager/Senior Nursing team on unit affairs and staff development.
  10. Ensure each designated staff member participates in a personal development plan and act to maximise the potential of others
  11. Assist in nursing recruitment process when required
  12. Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Department manager/Senior Nursing team

TRAINING & EDUCATION

Ìý

  1. Complete the Ward Introductory Pack and Preceptor pack
  2. Complete relevant in-house level 1 and 2 I.V. training programmes and ensure regular updates
  3. Participate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice
  4. To be up to date in all IV training programs including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice including assessment of critically ill patient and competent in performing ECG’s
  5. Attend all mandatory study days

  1. Act as a resource giving advice and support to nursing staff regarding emergency admissions and associated issues
  2. Liaise closely with the medical team and other members of the MDT in respect of patient care promoting the highest standard of care

  4. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department andÌýundertake relevant projects

  • RGN Level 1
  • Degree or Diploma in Nursing Studies
  • Post Registration Certificate in Cancer or equivalent
