The Christie is pleased to be able to offer an opportunity for a suitably experienced individual to join the Haematology and Teenage and Young Adult Service (TYA) to take on a role as Joint Ward Manager within the Palatine Ward.

Based at the Withington site, you will be a valued member of the Haematology and TYA quality team and work alongside one other ward manager. This role requires a dynamic and forward thinking individual to support and lead the Palatine ward team. ÌýÌý

Main duties of the job

This post will work closely with and be supported by the Palatine Ward Manager, Lead Nurse/Matron for Palatine Ward and Directorate Lead Nurse. We are looking for a self-motivated, proactive individual who is able to work well independently but also as part of a team. To lead and manage a dynamic nursing team within the Palatine Ward and be responsible for both TYA and Haemato-oncology patients.

You must be educated to degree level with a nursing qualification and be able to demonstrate excellent leadership skills.

If you are educated to a degree level with a nursing qualification and have experience in working within a dynamic and fast paced clinical environment with experience in haematology and TYA care, leadership, management of staff and be able to lead and undertake clinical audit and undertake service development, Ìýthen you are the right person to consider joining the Palatine team within the Haematology and TYA directorate.

Working for our organisation

The Christie haematology service acts as a tertiary referral centre for the management of patients with haematological malignancies and bone marrow failure. Inpatient haematology and transplant services for both adults and Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) patients are provided by the 31 bedded Palatine Treatment Ward, and the 4 bedded Withington Ward. Outpatient haematology services are provided by the Haematology and Transplant Day Unit (HTDU) and the ambulatory care facility. The Christie haematology service has grown extensively over the past few years with the development of new treatments and CAR T. Services are now delivered at 2 other trusts with plans to expand services closer to home further.

The directorate has a supportive and warm working culture where your contribution is valued. You will be joining a small quality team within the wider directorate focused on ensuring a high standard of patient care and experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To lead and manage a dynamic nursing team within the Palatine Ward and be responsible for both TYA and Haemato-oncology patients.
  • To work alongside staff as a role model and mentor. To ensure that the caring culture expected of professional staff is being consistently maintained and upheld.
  • To be identifiable as the leader of the areas, and provide the guidance and direction required to empower the team to deliver the best standards of care for patients.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that the Palatine Ward nursing team works as an integrated group and as part of the wider Palatine Treatment Centre.Ìý
  • Working with the Medical team, CNS & other MDT members to optimise care planning for patients and ensure a consistent approach to high standard compassionate care.
  • To support the staff in all aspects of their roles and in developing the specialist skills required for TYA and Haematology nursing, developing clinical competencies and leadership skills within the team.
  • To ensure efficient use of available capacity and promote an integrated team approach across the ward. Ìý
  • To demonstrate initiative and vision to continue to move the TYA and Haematology services forward, and implement local and national service changes / developments.
  • To demonstrate expert clinical knowledge and expertise at all times.
  • As a core member of the senior nursing team in TYA and Haematology services, attendance is anticipated at all the quality, management meetings and grand ward rounds where possible.

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

1. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Provide clear leadership for nursing team of the integrated Palatine Ward.

2. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Be a key participant in promoting and facilitating excellent standards of compassionate care for patients.

3. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý To establish and maintain agreed standards of patient care, utilising appropriate guidance from the Teenage Cancer Trust, JACIE, and peer reviews.

4. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý To have dedicated time working in a supervisory capacity to support and develop staff, alongside working clinically, being visible and accessible to patients and families, and to medical and MDT colleagues.

5. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Work clinically within the area to provide expert clinical knowledge and expertise.

6. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Implement changes to the service to support ongoing improvements in clinical practice, reflecting capacity and demand issues.

7. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý To liaise with the Service Manager and Lead Nurses across the department to ensure optimal capacity usage, and ensure all activity is recorded live on Medway.

8. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Liaise with the discharge team and allied health professionals to promote proactive discharge planning.

9. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Have a daily awareness of length of stay issues and follow the escalation guidelines.Ìý

10. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýCollaborate with other service providers to ensure that the highest standards of possible nutrition for patients are achieved.

11. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýCollaborate with other service providers in ensuring the highest possible standards of cleanliness are achieved and be proactive in reducing hospital acquired infections and reduce the risk of cross infection. Ensure that maintenance issues within the Palatine Ward are reported/escalated as per local agreement.

12. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýBe aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant and timely risk assessments are undertaken. Be responsible for updating the nursing/unit based elements of the risk register.

13. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýReport and record all incidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately, and feeding back to the reporter on completion of investigation.

14. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýTo organise daily work schedule and off duty rotas ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs.

15. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýTo be aware and have a clear understanding in maintaining the staff and non-staff budget within agreed limits.Ìý

16. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýEnsure the requisition and procurement of stock and equipment is carried out with care and economy.

17. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýAttend monthly review meetings and take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Lead Nurse and Human ResourcesÌý

18. Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýTake appropriate action in relation to any disciplinary matter when the need arises and follow procedures as lay down by the Trust.

TRAINING SUPPORT & EDUCATION

1. Ìý Ìý Attend all mandatory study days and ensure attendance of all staff and have a consistent over-view of ward compliance.

2. Ìý Ìý To be up to date in all IV training programs (level 1 and 2) including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice.

3. Ìý Ìý To be up to date and competent with other clinical skills: basic life support and intermediate life support, and others pertinent to the unit.

4. Ìý Ìý Ensure all staff have an appropriate level of training and are offered relevant support. Encourage and support staff in developing skills and knowledge around TYA /Haematology nursing.

5. Ìý Ìý Ensure each staff member participates in their personal development plan, to maximise their potential.Ìý

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN Level 1/RSCN/RN Child
  • Degree in Nursing Studies Post Registration Certificate in Cancer care or equivalent
  • Qualification in Teaching & assessing or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Management/Leadership Course.
  • Formal Training in TYA care
  • Formal Training in Stem Cell Transplantation/ ATMP

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in Haemato oncological nursing and/ or TYA Oncology (ideally both).
  • Significant management experience at a Band 6 level or above.
  • Experience of performance management
Desirable criteria
  • Significant TYA nursing experience.
  • Significant experience in stem cell transplantation/ ATMP’s .
