Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated Paediatric Surgery team based at the Great North Children鈥檚 Hospital.聽聽

The post is to commence in October 2025 for 12 months and is extendable for a maximum period of 24 months provided there is evidence of satisfactory performance.

You will hold MRCS or equivalent and preferably, a degree in Paediatric surgery and will be fully registered with the GMC, or eligible for full registration within the timeframes set out in the person specification. Previous clinical experience overseas in Paediatric Surgery would be desirable. You will be an effective team worker with the ability to communicate well with both patients and staff at all levels. 聽

Main duties of the job

This is a post accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons under its International surgical training programme (ISTP). 聽This is a post directed specifically at an International medical graduate interested in enhancing his/her experience in Paediatric surgery and having the experience of working in the UK. You will support with the provision of specialist paediatric surgical services to the Northern Region, which will include three elective operating lists and two outpatient sessions per week, as well as ward assessment and management of elective and emergency admissions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical:

鈥 聽 聽Ward assessment and management of elective and emergency admissions.
鈥 聽 聽Experience in neonatal surgical and intensive care unit.
鈥 聽 聽Three elective operating lists and 2 outpatient sessions per week.
鈥 聽 聽On-call duties on a 1 in 7 basis including prospective cover.
鈥 聽 聽Maintain high standards of clinical care, contemporary note keeping and adherence to the admission and discharge process.
鈥 聽 聽Responsibility for effective communication with other members of the clinical team to ensure the planned management for each patient is carried out.
鈥 聽 聽Communication with patients and their relatives.
鈥 聽 聽Arrange investigations for patients and ensure results available in a timely manner.
鈥 聽 聽Undertake referrals to other clinical teams and ensure effective communication of the underlying problem.
鈥 聽 聽Undertake a key role in planning and implementing effective discharge, including any communication with the relevant community care team.
鈥 聽 聽Ensure medical students have opportunity to meet their own learning outcomes.
鈥 聽 聽Participate in feedback and evaluation of the foundation programme.
鈥 聽 聽Participate fully in educational programme and ensure that appraisal and feedback occurs in a timely manner.

Audit:

鈥 聽 聽Active participation in Clinical Audit is expected and time is set aside to encompass this.

Emergencies:

鈥 聽 聽You will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with your colleagues both senior and junior. 聽It has been agreed between the profession and the department that while junior doctors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under the subsection are exceptional and, in particular, that junior doctors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Study and Training:

鈥 聽 聽The post is in a department recognised for training in Paediatric Surgery.
鈥 聽 聽Subject to the exigencies of the service, time off with pay and expenses for approved courses and conferences is granted in accordance with Regional Policy.
鈥 聽 聽Formal postgraduate education is mostly carried out at a once weekly 鈥淕rand Round鈥 which occupies an entire morning. 聽The session commences with a radiology meeting led by a Consultant Radiologist followed by teaching and then Grand rounds. Paediatric Urology has a radiology meeting before the main radiology meeting. There is a once monthly clinical audit meeting and there is discussion of significant administrative or clinical problems that have arisen in the department. 聽There are monthly meetings for Pathology, Morbidity and Mortality, Audit Projects and Journal Club.
鈥 聽 聽Weekly multidisciplinary meetings are held with the Departments of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Paediatric Oncology and Paediatric Nephrology, as well as the opportunities to attend prenatal counselling sessions for parents of infants with surgical conditions.
鈥 聽 聽The University medical library is located in the Medical School to which the Royal Victoria Infirmary is directly connected. 聽This library is open in the evenings during term-time and access from the Royal Victoria Infirmary is easy. 聽The department itself is well supplied with relevant textbooks and journals.
鈥 聽 聽Study facilities are provided by the University Department of Surgery and the University Department of Child Health

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Must hold full GMC registration or be eligible to obtain full GMC registration within 3 months (or within 6 months for non EEA applicants)
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Paediatric surgery or equivalent
  • Other relevant qualifications (ALS, ATLS, PALS)

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Competence at advanced cardio-respiratory arrest resuscitation in children (including team leadership)
  • Good history and examination skills, relevant to critical care
  • Ability to formulate a working diagnosis
  • Able to order appropriate investigations relevant to critical care
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague
  • Legible writing of notes/charts

Maintaining Clinical Competence
