The Deputy Director of Strategy is an important leadership role within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, focused on delivering the Trust’s Strategy, Annual Planning and Partnership development. ÌýThe postholder will lead the Trusts response to addressing health inequalities and its role as an Anchor institution, ensuring the Trust is compliant with relevant legal and regulatory requirements. ÌýThe postholder will contribute to the development and delivery of the Future Christie transformation programme.

The Deputy Director will be responsible for:
- Ensuring delivery of the Trust’s 5 year strategy.
- Leading the Trust’s annual planning process.
- Developing business cases and proposals in support of the Trust’s strategy.
- Leading the Trust’s work in addressing health inequalities and as an Anchor institution.
- Supporting the development of key partnerships including joint venture arrangements.
- Supporting the development of commercial opportunities.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

Strategy & Planning
- Produce an annual delivery plan in support of the Trust’s Strategy.
- Design and implement a comprehensive, Board level, assurance regime with associated metrics to be able to measure and report progress of implementation against delivery of the Trust’s Strategy.
- Lead delivery of the Trust’s Strategy, engaging multiple internal and where necessary external partners and manage the coordination of complex strategically significant business developments.
- Develop and implement any necessary delivery plans required to support the Trust’s strategy and coordinate their implementation with divisional teams and support services and other external partners as necessary.
- Ensure strong clinical engagement is undertaken with appropriate clinical leaders within the Trust’s operating divisions in order to support them deliver their divisional strategic objectives.
- Support and take a lead role where required in the development of strategic business cases and be accountable for relevant budgets as necessary.
- Contribute to the development of other Trust strategies through the provision of expert advice and guidance.
- Develop appropriate training materials to support the development and deployment of strategy across the Trust.
- Undertake horizon scanning, policy analysis and reviews of relevant documents and guidance to ensure Trust’s strategic ambitions are fully aligned. ÌýDevelop appropriate briefing materials to ensure that the Board and Trust Committees are kept abreast of policy development.
- Work with the Christie’s Communications team to ensure the effective communication to staff of the Trusts’ Strategy and work programmes.
- With Finance, lead the Trust’s annual planning cycle, ensuring the associated effective programme governance arrangements are in place.
- Ensure the development of an annual plan for the Trust including the development of annual objectives.

Partnerships
- Develop relationships with internal and external partners – NHS and commercial – in support of the Trusts Strategy including leading the development and delivery of any necessary bids.
- Provide expert advice and guidance in the development of the Trust’s existing joint venture and future commercial developments.
- Represent the Christie in agreed GM and national fora and influence the strategic direction of the system in support of the Trust’s strategic aims, for example in Diagnostics and Pathology.
- Develop the Christie@ model, working with partners to explore opportunities to develop our services closer to patients home.

Inequalities & Anchors
- Provide leadership, with others, to the Trust’s inequalities agenda, ensuring that relevant annual plans are developed and delivery monitored.
- Lead the Trust’s response to the Anchors agenda, ensuring that relevant annual plans are developed and delivery monitored.
- To represent the Trust at relevant external fora, for example the GM Anchors Network.

Specialised Clinical Services Networks
- Provide line management support to the hosted Specialised Clinical Services Networks Programme Managers.
- Ensure that The Christie is meeting the obligations of the Network hosting agreements with NHS England and providing effective and efficient support to the Specialised Clinical Services Networks through regular meetings with the Network Managers.

- Work with the International Programme Manager to further develop the Trust’s international offer in line with the agreed strategy.

Qualifications

- First degree.
- Post graduate qualification or equivalent level of experience.
- Masters Degree or equivalent professional, vocational qualification and good knowledge of programme management practice supported by evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Experience

- Experience in a large NHS or private healthcare organisation working on projects that involved clinical staff and operational change or organisations with similar characteristics.
- Experience of successful direct and matrix management of several staff from own and supplier departments or organisations, including appraisal, coaching and the application of related personnel policies.
- Experience of delivering projects within in a major programme.
- Budget management and budget setting, including allocation of delegated budgets.
- Understanding of the wider NHS policy landscape, and specifically within cancer.
- Experience of strategy development and delivery.
- Experience of NHS annual planning processes.
