Job overview

Exciting opportunities at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust have arisen.Ìý The vascular scanning department is one of the largest in London which covers services over three sites, Hammersmith Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital. We have close relationships with the consultants and the LAVVU team, especially at Charing Cross with clinics, scanning rooms and a LAVVU theatre all on the same floor. We are seeking a Clinical Vascular Scientist to join our large team of 11 clinical vascular scientists plus 2 STP students.

The job involves an interesting case load, we perform the full spectrum of vascular scans, plus specialist investigations such as AV fistula, TCD, TCCD for sickle cell and mesenterics for MALS and nutcracker syndrome. We support continued professional development, with interests in research, teaching or the SVT actively encouraged.Ìý Non-clinical time is allocated for CPD and unit responsibilities. There are regular opportunities to attend conferences including the annual SVT and CX symposium.

We are an accredited STP & HSST training centre and play an active role in the programme. Suitable candidates have the opportunity to attend Train the Trainer and take on a training officer role for STPs. As an accredited HSST training centre we are also able to offer the opportunity to advance your development by applying for HSST (subject to funding approval).

As a band 7 clinical vascular scientist, we would expect you to be independently scanning and reporting and if not accredited with the Society for Vascular Technology, working towards this.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake, interpret and report ultrasound scans and other tests for vascular conditions.
  • To triage requests from clinicians, prioritize them according to clinical need and perform the appropriate test.
  • Provide expert advice, support and guidance to junior staff and to the wider vascular team.

Person specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A relevant science degree
  • PgCert, PgDip or MSc in vascular ultrasound or relevant subject
Desirable criteria
  • Accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist or equivalent.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of an accumulation of three years practical experience as a trainee vascular scientist
  • Commitment to continued professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of IQIPS
  • Experience of performing audits

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Independently scanning and reporting on the following modalities: carotid, lower & upper limb arterial, lower & upper limb venous (DVT & CVI), ABPI/Exercise ABPIs, AAAs & EVARs
  • Excellent hand to eye coordination
  • Highly developed visual and auditory skills to interpret ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound images
  • Excellent hand to eye coordination.
Desirable criteria
  • Independently scanning and reporting on specialist vascular ultrasound investigations such as: temporal arteries, renal scans, popliteal & iliac entrapment and MALS.
