NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England caring for almost 850 trauma patients annually many with complex care needs. We are enhancing our urgent and emergency care specialist services for patients with significant injuries as a result of trauma and have an ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre.

Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Emergency Medicine.听

These appointments are to the Trust, not to听specific hospitals. Our Trust footprint currently听includes Cromer Hospital (25 miles from NNUH).听The ED Consultants also provide support for a听minor injury鈥檚 unit in Cromer in terms of clinical听advice, and support with protocol development.听The MIU is staffed by ENPs.

We have a 鈥淐ommand and Control鈥 Consultant听in charge of ED during the day. They coordinate听the working day and prioritise where staffing听should be placed, based on safety and demand.听The on-call consultant is responsible for the听running of the department and has oversight of听clinical safety overnight when the registrar holds听the C&C position.

Main duties of the job

Within ED
鈥 Provision of safe, timely, high-quality care to听patients
鈥 Undertake different roles within the听department as required
鈥 Provide clinical leadership and supervision of听junior medical staff
鈥 24/7 Trauma Team leader
鈥 Participation in teaching programs within the听department
鈥 Act as educational and clinical supervisor for a听wide range of trainees
鈥 Take on specific roles in the department that听require consultant oversight and ensure these听specific parts of the service achieve their听desired aims and objectives.
鈥 Undertake review of formal imaging reports

Clinical Governance
鈥 Be proactive in the Clinical Governance agenda听for the department. This includes participation听in audit and quality improvement projects,听guidelines/pathways, professional听development, appraisal and risk management听as well as attending Clinical Governance听meetings
鈥 Attend Directorate meetings to contribute to听the development of the service听

Personal Development
鈥 Maintain the Trusts PRIDE Values
鈥 Participate in Continuing Professional听Development and appraisal
鈥 To undergo regular revalidation as set out by听the GMC

Within the Trust
鈥 Liaise with clinicians and leads outside of the听ED to address issues that arise
鈥 Participation in teaching programs across the听wider hospital community and the University听of East Anglia
鈥 The appointees will be members of the听Consultant Staff Committee

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • 鈥 CCST Specialist Registration in Emergency Medicine OR 鈥 Eligibility for specialist registration in Emergency Medicine within 6 months from the time of the interview
  • ALS, APLS/EPLS, ATLS provider
  • FRCEM
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor status in Advanced life support courses
  • Postgraduate diploma / degree

Leadership

Essential criteria

Experience

  • Experience gained in acquisition of CCT
