Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for the Wessex interventional cardiology fellowship. This encompasses 4 appointments across the region in 3 trusts 鈥 Portsmouth(QAH), Southampton(UHS) and Bournemouth(UHD). There is 2 posts in UHS (TAVI and PCI), with 1 at UHD and 1 at QAH (both PCI)

In general, all the posts will carry with them training in interventional cardiology. All three centres have busy 24/7 primary PCI services across the Wessex region 鈥 covering the area from East Sussex to West Dorset and parts of Wiltshire.

In all trusts, the successful candidate will receive advanced training in all aspects of percutaneous coronary intervention in both acute and stable patients. All have established CTO programmes and perform complex 鈥淐HIP鈥 angioplasty.

For a candidate with suitable experience, UHS offers a post with training in structural intervention within our TAVI and mitral programmes.听

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU鈥橪L DO听

Successful applicants can expect to have high quality training in all aspects interventional cardiology. All labs are well provisioned and across the Wessex region, 90% of cases are undertaken via the radial approach. The successful applicants can expect to have exposure and training in IVUS, OCT, and advanced intracoronary physiology using various technologies. 听Recanalisation of chronic total occlusions is a major interest within each department. 听Each lab is fully equipped with rotational atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy.听

In all trusts, the successful candidate will receive advanced training in percutaneous coronary intervention in both acute and stable patients. All have established CTO programmes and perform complex 鈥淐HIP鈥 angioplasty. There will be a weekly outpatient clinic for complex PCI patients and the post holder will be responsible for running a weekly angio review session as well as preparing the cardiac surgical MDT. 听听

There is an active research program across the region and within all trusts and the successful applicant will be encouraged to support ongoing trials and also to develop their own research interests. It is expected that the successful candidate will submit abstracts to major national and international cardiology meetings.听

It is recognised that audit and assessment of quality and patient experience are essential for optimal service delivery and these form an integral component of this position.听

For a candidate with suitable experience, UHS offers a post formally training in all aspects of TAVI, within our expanding structural interventional programme. This also include exposure to percutaneous edge: edge repair techniques as appropriate听

听WHAT WE鈥橰E LOOKING FOR听

It is expected that successful candidates will have hold an NTN and completed their core cardiology training, and are formally training in interventional cardiology as a sub specialty. We would welcome applicants that have completed formal registrar training.听

There is an on call commitment and the post-holder will require to be fully trained in non-invasive cardiology (including trans thoracic echocardiography, with experience in trans-oesophageal echocardiography), diagnostic catheterization, pacing (both temporary and permanent and all aspects of general clinical cardiology. The precise frequency and pattern of on call varies from site to site 鈥 but it remains a core component of all positions. 听

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 听

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). 听听
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post.

The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process. 听Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.听

Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) 听 听听

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview 听Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. 听

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible. 听

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • 24-36 months as SHO in various G(I)M specialties leading to completion of CMT
  • 24-36 months as SpR in Cardiology
  • Completion of Core Cardiology curriculum
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of cardiology emergencies
  • Knowledge of cardiology complications, their treatment and prevention
