Applications are invited for one of two Band 8C Deputy Head / Consultant Physicist posts within the Regional Radiation Protection Service (RRPS), part of the Department of Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford.Ìý

You will join a team of 24+ medical physicists, technicians and computer scientists supported by an admin team. The service provides comprehensive radiation protection, diagnostic radiology and x-ray engineering services to a wide variety of NHS Trusts, private healthcare providers, dentists, veterinary practices, industrial services and others. We are active in research, development and training, organising courses both locally and at a national level. The Service is closely involved in the University of Surrey’s MSc programmes in Medical Physics, Medical Imaging and Radiation and Environmental Protection. Opportunities to participate in teaching, research and development are highly encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The Regional Radiation Protection Service (RRPS) provides comprehensive radiation protection, diagnostic radiology physics and X-ray engineering services out of the Royal Surrey County Hospital area mainly to the south and south west of the country, but also works nationally and internationally. Services include the statutory provision of Radiation Protection Advisers (RPA), Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology, Laser Protection Advisers (LPA), Radioactive Waste Advisers (RWA) and MR Safety Experts.Ìý

We have a team of 11 clinical scientists,11 medical physics technical officers, a computer scientist and 3 admin staff, plus postgraduate trainees and undergraduate students. The RRPS also provides advice and services to users of non-ionising radiations including MRI, lasers, radiofrequency, ultraviolet and microwaves.Ìý The Service provides NHSBSP mammography services for the South East (East) region. The RRPS is active in income generation outside the NHS and provides a wide range of radiation protection advice and services to a variety of employers including corporate organisations, companies, private hospitals, dentists, vets and others. The service is active in research, development and training, including organising courses both locally and at a national level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will be involved in all aspects of the work across diagnostic radiology including non-ionising areas such as MRI, ultrasound, lasers and UV.Ìý Radiation protection / waste advisory support is also provided to a number of Nuclear Medicine departments, PET/CT scanners and radiotherapy centres. Applicants will be expected to be registered healthcare professionals and be certified as an RPA and MPE. Other qualified expert certification such as RWA, LPA or MRSE would be expected or support provided in attaining. High level management and financial responsibilities will also be part of the role.

To act as a Consultant Clinical Scientist and one of two Deputies to the Head of Service. Share or spilt responsible between deputies to overseeing the day to day running of the annual operation of services to clients, supporting in service and scientific development and driving improvements. Working with and managing other team members in the provision of a comprehensive radiation protection and radiological physics service. To manage the teaching and training responsibilities both internally and external courses. To support with financial aspects of the department such as budgeting, quoting and invoicing.Ìý

To act as a qualified expert under the relevant regulations, in particular as a Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert (MPE). To participate in all areas of work, and to take on responsibility for key aspects of the service.

The post holder will work at a very senior professional level, providing advice and services to employers facilitating regulatory compliance.Ìý Issues are very specialist, varied and highly complex.

It is expected that the post holder will be able to operate with a high degree of autonomy, particularly in the areas for which they are responsible. They will be expected to routinely work with senior trust management and executives and supporting the head of department in all areas of the service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good honours degree in a relevant subject
  • MSc or PhD in radiation protection, medical physics [or equivalent]
  • Corporate Membership of IPEM [or equivalent]
  • MPE Certification
  • Certified Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA2000)
  • Additional RWA, LPA, MRSE or equivalent Qualified Expert Certification
  • State Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the HCPC

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of the nature, use, risks and radiation protection of ionising radiations such as X-rays, gamma rays and electrons.
  • Expert and specialist knowledge and understanding of all the areas of legislation, approved codes and good guidance, applicable to the use of ionising radiations in the field of medical, dental, veterinary and industry where appropriate.
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge to act as a Medical Physics Expert regarding the safety of the patient under IRMER within the field of radiology.
  • Specialist knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of digital and analogue state of the art X-ray imaging equipment.
  • Extensive experience in medical physics and radiation protection. Analysing and interpreting highly complex and varied situations and judging measures required to assess performance, risk and benefit in comparison with relevant legislation, codes, guidance and standards.
  • Specialist experience or awareness in the use of physics testing equipment and complex procedures employed to measure the application, performance and safety of a wide variety of X-ray and other ionising and non-ionising radiation equipment.
  • A high level of understanding of clinical risks to patients, staff and public arising from ionising radiation exposure.
  • High level of understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines
  • Extensive experience in acting as a certified RPA and working within a radiation protection team
  • Extensive experience in teaching and training varied groups of staff across a range of medical physics, diagnostic radiology and radiation protection subject areas and organising courses modules at regional and national level
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of ultrasound and non-ionising radiations including magnetic, electric fields, ultraviolet, infrared, microwaves and particularly lasers.
