Job overview
We are seeking an experienced Advanced Pharmacist Technical/Cancer Services to lead and develop high-quality pharmacy services within Technical and Cancer Services at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is a full-time, permanent position where you will provide expert pharmaceutical advice, ensure regulatory compliance, and support efficient medicine use in cancer care.
As part of this role, you will provide supervision within the Pharmacy Technical Services Department, ensuring adherence to GMP, GCP, and NHS QA guidelines.
You will also play a key role in quality assurance, risk management, and the strategic development of pharmacy services, including the implementation of National Guidance and cost-saving initiatives.
Main duties of the job
- Lead and develop clinical pharmacy services in Haematology and Oncology.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, MHRA, NHS QA, and National Guidelines (NICE, Cancer Measures).
- Manage and supervise Technical/Cancer Services pharmacists, overseeing performance and training.
- Act as a Releasing Officer for Intrathecal chemotherapy and ensure adherence to national standards.
- Provide financial oversight, ensuring income generation and adherence to budget targets.
- Contribute to clinical audits, research trials, and service evaluations.
- Support education and training of pharmacy staff and healthcare professionals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Provide expert pharmaceutical advice on medicines legislation, risk management, and compliance within Technical and Cancer Services.
- Manage and develop clinical pharmacy services in Haematology and Oncology, ensuring high-quality pharmaceutical care for patients.
- Support the implementation of patient’s own medicines and one-stop dispensing in line with departmental policies.
- Participate in horizon scanning for new chemotherapy agents and contribute to National Cancer Networks.
- Monitor compliance with National Guidelines (NICE, Cancer Measures, MHRA requirements) and ensure implementation within Cancer Services.
- Lead and manage Technical/Cancer Services pharmacists, including recruitment, performance reviews, and training.
- Act as a Releasing Officer for Intrathecal chemotherapy and ensure compliance with Department of Health guidelines.
- ÌýEnsure compliance with GMP, Quality Assurance, and MHRA Manufacturing Licences, and maintain Pharmaceutical Quality Systems.
- Provide financial oversight, ensuring income generation and adherence to budget targets.

Person specification
Education and qualifications:
Essential criteria
- MPharm (or equivalent overseas degree).
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Certificate in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
- MSc/Diploma in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
- Management Training.
Desirable criteria
- Pharmacist non-medical prescriber.
- Project management qualification.
- Risk management training.
- Post graduate training in the Preparative/Production services.
Knowledge:
Essential criteria
- Prescription Monitoring.
- Computer and IT Literate.
- Knowledge of clinical oncology or haematology.
- Knowledge of economics of healthcare.
- Understanding the role of the MHRA.
- Understanding of licensing regulations and their application to hospital.
- Excellent technical and practical knowledge of GMP.
- Understanding of clinical trials and legislation.
- Well-developed therapeutic and clinical pharmacy knowledge in appropriate areas.

Experience:
Essential criteria
- Post registration experience as a hospital pharmacist providing a pharmacy service to oncology and haematology patients.
- Extensive experience in technical pharmacy production in pharmaceutical industry or hospital setting.
- Experience within a range of technical specialties.
- Experience in providing clinical services to cancer patients.
- Clinical Trials/GCP.
- Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Evidence of clinical audit, practice research, implementation of procedures and protocols.
- Experience of successfully leading and implementing service improvement and change projects.
- Training Pre-registration Pharmacists and Junior Staff.
- Experience of managing others.
- Experience in utilising information technology within the workplace including inputting, retrieving information and producing reports.
- Experience of ChemoCare or other chemotherapy electronic prescribing systems.
- Experience electronic prescribing systems (e.g. Cerner).
