Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and well-established team of Anaesthetists as a consultant in paediatric anaesthesia at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. 'The L&D' has a total of 641 beds across all disciplines and serves a local population of over 400,000 from Luton, Dunstable and towns and villages in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
The Anaesthetic department has four Consultants with a specific interest in Paediatrics (including infants and babies less than six months old) and many others who regularly anaesthetise children. The department provides anaesthesia for Paediatric general surgery (including infants), Paediatric MRI, Paediatric ENT, OMFS, Orthopaedics (including infants), Urology, Community dental services, and Ophthalmic surgery (including infants).
Luton and Dunstable hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands.Ìý London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from the hospital.Ìý There are many attractive villages and towns nearby like St Albans and Harpenden which has excellent schools.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will join the well-established Anaesthetics Department as part of a service development plan, where we currently have a new Acute Surgical Block (ASB) under construction which is due for completion in 2025.Ìý
The Acute Services Block will include a complete new maternity department, NICU, eight new operating theatres (adjoined to six existing) and a 22 bed critical care unit.
The Paediatric is Unit renowned in the East of England as a very busy unit seeing a combination of high volume common conditions and also many rare conditions and recognised for offering top paediatric training. All children admitted as inpatients by any team are cared for on the Paediatric Unit which consists of 54 beds incorporating 3 wards and a 5 bed Paediatric Assessment Unit occupying one floor of the surgical block.
Applicants must be included in the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics or be within six months of CCT accreditation.Ìý The successful applicants will provide a comprehensive high quality Anaesthesia service.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCA or equivalent
- On the specialty register in Anaesthesia or eligible for entry within 6 months of the interview date
- Level 2 Child Protection Training
- APLS
- SIA in Paediatric Anaesthesia (or 6 months of advanced training)
Desirable criteria
- MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
- Level 3 Child Protection Training
Registration
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
Clinical Effectiveness
Essential criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
- Experience of guideline appraisal
- Participation in relevant local audits
- Ability to interpret and apply clinical research
Desirable criteria
- Participation in relevant national audits
- Evidence of quality improvement activity in Paediatric anaesthesia
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.

Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
Personnel Circumstances
Essential criteria
- Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
- Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
- Satisfactory DBS clearance
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Excellent all round experience of DGH work
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Anaesthetics and Advanced Airway Management Skills
- Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable criteria
- Additional training in Paediatric Anaesthesia beyond that required for CCT (or equivalent) for instance a fellowship in Paediatric anaesthesia
