Job overview

The Royal Berkshire Hospital is delighted to offer a Royal College of Surgeons of England approved Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Fellowship. It has a multidisciplinary focus involving ENT Surgeons, Oncologists, Endocrinologists, Radiologists and Pathologists. Its aim is to provide comprehensive training in the medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid disease. Potential candidates should be senior ENT/Otolaryngology trainees who look to enhance their expertise prior to commencing a career as a consultant.

Within the ENT department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, there are 3 Consultant Surgeons - Mr Nagala, Mr Cherko and Ms Walton, who specialise in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery. The number of thyroid/parathyroid operations performed within the department is in excess of 150 per year. The Royal Berkshire Hospital is also member of the Oxford Thyroid Cancer MDT - currently one of the largest MDTs in the UK. The unit also benefits from close working relations with our Endocrinology colleagues, and we conduct a monthly Parathyroid MDT to manage complex cases. The UK鈥檚 first transoral thyroidectomy was performed at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, highlighting the Trust鈥檚 ambition for innovation

Main duties of the job

The fellowship offers exposure to medical and surgical management of malignant and benign thyroid and parathyroid disease. Outpatient commitments would include specialist thyroid clinics and teaching in ultrasound techniques. There are also opportunities for exposure to transoral thyroid surgery, laryngology, salivary gland disease, diagnostic head and neck cancer work and facial plastic surgery. We encourage fellows to visit neighbouring and allied units to observe alternative practice

Working for our organisation

The Royal Berkshire was rated as an 鈥極utstanding鈥 Hospital in its January 2018 CQC report, and was ranked as the number one place to complete foundation training in 2017. In 2014 the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust was voted in the top 100 places to work. The RBH Emergency Department has achieved the highest grade (Excellent) for the last six years (GMC Survey).听听听听听听听听听听听

The Trust is one of the largest general hospital Trusts in the country and is Reading鈥檚 biggest employer:听

Underpinning this are听our values - CARE: Compassion, Aspiration, Resourceful and Excellence.听听听(including all major medical specialities including CCU, Renal Unit, ITU and gastroenterology), radiotherapy and oncology, and all the general surgical specialities.

We encourage fellows to visit neighbouring and allied units to observe alternative practice.

The fellow will also be responsible to teach junior doctors and nurses during ward rounds, outpatient clinics, emergency situations and operating sessions. It is expected that fellows will join the on-call rota and will also undertake general Head and Neck ENT outpatient clinics, including a One-stop neck lump clinic.

From an academic perspective, the department is currently involved in 2 national clinical trials and the opportunity to undertake research will be encouraged.
