This is an appointment for 1 year full-time post for a Specialist Registrar Doctor via the medical training initiative pathway at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust with a view to extension for the right candidate if successful in a subsequent interview.听听
听
The applicant will contribute to malignant and non-malignant haematology services at a middle grade (ST) level. The role may also be appropriate for a suitably qualified person to take on as part time if it fulfils the department鈥s expectations and needs.听 The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the day to day functioning of the department at a level based on their experience. The successful applicant will work with all consultants and existing staff grade/middle grade doctors to cover the services provided at the trust. The successful applicant will support the current delivery of Clinical haematology services, including contribution to the future development at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.听听
听
There is a possibility to develop subspecialist interests within haematology as part of the restructuring of the Clinical Haematology department at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. There is also potential for collaboration with Oxford University Hospitals (OUH), which is one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in the UK and has a national and international reputation for development of a speciality interest if the candidate wishes to.听听听

Main duties of the job
Immediate Responsibilities of the Appointee听
Middle grade cover for the Haematology services including Adelaide ward (in-patient unit), West ward (Haematology Day unit), OP clinics, laboratory services and other services currently provided by the department.听听
听
Duties include:听

Attending middle grade doctor for haematology inpatients听

Medical cover for patients attending the onsite Day Unit听

Laboratory reporting (prior experience of laboratory haematology is not essential 鈥 training will be given)听

Outpatient clinics- Both in Main OP services and Day unit听

On call telephone advice and ward referrals听

Participation in departmental clinical governance and quality improvement activities听

On call rota at a middle grade level (depending on the experience)听

The successful applicant will rotate through posts involving the ward, laboratory, day unit and out patient clinic.听

The Royal Berkshire Hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006. It was the first Foundation Trust in the South-Central Strategic Health Authority. The Trust has a successful track record of delivering high quality acute medical and surgical services for 500,000 patients across West Berkshire, an area extending from Newbury in the west to Henley-on-Thames in the east, and including Wokingham and parts of Hampshire to the south and parts of Oxfordshire to the north. The Trust is one of the largest general hospital Trusts in the country and is Reading鈥檚 biggest employer:听听听

The hospital provides all those services normally associated with a very large District General Hospital. The hospital provides services on a single site for all the major specialities including Accident and Emergency, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Genitourinary Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillo-Facial surgery, paediatrics (including a NICU), general medicine (including all major medical specialities including CCU, Renal Unit, ITU and gastroenterology), radiotherapy and oncology, and all the general surgical specialities.听听

The trust provides several services Berkshire-wide (eg Ophthalmology, renal). Following the principle of care closer to home, the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust offers services from many locations, including King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, Windsor dialysis unit, , Royal Berkshire Bracknell Health space, Townlands Hospital Henley and there are visiting clinics in Wallingford and Wantage.听

The Trust has in place a Clinically Led structure placing the decision making responsibilities with Clinicians supported by management teams. The appointee will have the opportunity and be encouraged to develop laboratory expertise, take part in clinical trials, undertake management responsibilities that are appropriate and be involved in teaching and training. Senior staff grade appointees may eventually be able to develop in to an Associate Specialist if such opportunities present themselves in future.听听

All doctors, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust鈥檚 Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.听
听
The appointee will provide continuing appropriate care for patients in his/her charge and in partnership with colleagues work to ensure optimum functioning of the department. This will require coordination between haematology consultants, junior doctors and nursing staff in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.听
听
There is a weekly middle grade teaching programme and weekly morphology meeting.听听
There are opportunities for training and study leave for SAS doctors with a study leave budget.听
The appointee will provide cover for colleagues' annual and study leave.听

- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- GMC registered to practice.
- Completion of Foundation year 2.
- Previous experience of working in the NHS as a doctor.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
