Job overview
This is a fixed term 6-12 month post for a Senior Shoulder Fellow at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful applicant will support the current delivery of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Shoulder Service, as well as contributing to the development of this service, at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients, and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.
The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Orthopaedic Department is to become a leader in the field of Orthopaedic management and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as team work, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.
听
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties will include two outpatient clinics per week, one formal ward round and three to four operating sessions.听 The fellow may participate in a fracture clinic a week and there will be time available for research.听 There will be an on-call emergency duty commitment attached to this post on a 24-hour partial shift rota with the other Specialist Registrars and Staff Grades.听 There is a daily meeting at 7:45 am to discuss management of trauma admitted during the previous 24 hours.听 The Shoulder Fellow will be expected to take part in these and to contribute to the teaching of the junior staff.
The applicant will be expected to be computer literate.听 The applicant should be post FRCS (Orth) or equivalent and following or close to CCT accreditation. The post is for six months, extendible to a one year.听
The Fellow is expected to actively participate in, initiate and continue research projects within the unit (both prospective and retrospective research). They will also be expected to complete projects and present and publish the results.
The post offers exposure to high volume elective shoulder and elbow cases, including complex arthroscopic and primary/revision arthroplasty procedures. There is a dedicated upper limb trauma list devoted to shoulder and elbow trauma each week. In addition, there are opportunities to treat general trauma cases as part of the on-call system.

We form part of the Thames Valley Trauma Network and work in partnership with neighbouring Trusts across the Thames Valley to provide the best possible standard of care to our patients. Patients that require specialist intervention and sarcoma care may be treated at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre or the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, which is the regional specialist-commissioned Orthopaedic and Major Trauma provider.

We also offer six highly respected and sought after fellowships, as well as offering training opportunities across all clinical and administrative disciplines.

Essential criteria
- Full registration with GMC
- FRCS
- Demonstration of specialist training in Orthopaedic surgery
Desirable criteria
- Qualification/Experience in Upper Limb Surgery
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in Surgery at senior SpR level
- Ability to offer clinical opinion on a range of problems in upper limb conditions
- Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients with upper limb conditions
Desirable criteria
- Research with higher degree ideally in the field of Orthopaedic surgery

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
