Job overview

To lead the specialist chaplaincy service for the Trust. The chaplaincy lead will work with the other Chaplains and Chaplaincy team to provide support to patients, relatives, staff and students with their religious, spiritual and or pastoral needs within the hospital. Our goal is to offer a distinctive service in personal support, listening, encouragement, prayer, as requested or needed in our hospital context of suffering, care, healing, change, loss and bereavement. Our strap line is ‘lifting and soothing spirits’.

Main duties of the job

To lead, manage and develop the provision of Religious, Spiritual and Pastoral care to all patients, staff and families/carers across the Trust.

To manage the Trust’s Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care service resources.

To manage and develop the BWC Chaplaincy bereavement Pathway.

To Manage and develop the Celebrate Project and Spiritual Play

To work with other lead Allied Health Professionals and other professional leads to promote religious and spiritual care for patients, carers and the Trust.

Promote the inclusion of patients, families/carers and staff.
To provide a direct Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care service to patients, families and staff with complex and end of life needs including on call provision

To take a Trust wide role in supporting the development of staff wellbeing and support, promotion of organisational values, promotion and monitoring of equalities and human rights, mediation and management of bereavement services

To increase awareness and understanding of the needs of people suffering perinatal and paediatric ill health with representatives of local faith communities.

To take a regional and national lead in developing perinatal and pediatric informed spiritual care for the benefit of patient care

To conduct and supervise audits, and to develop and evaluate new spiritual care programmes. To participate in relevant research as required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be accountable for financial responsibility for the service and its service development

To be responsible for authorising timesheets and expenses for spiritual and pastoral care staff and volunteers.

To be responsible for ordering resources to support service delivery

Hold a delegated budget for the Chaplaincy service

Provide expert education and training for staff at all levels across the Trust with regards to the best possible standards in spiritual care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of Degree or equivalent in Chaplaincy, Theology, Religious Studies or other relevant field
  • Post graduate certificate in Healthcare Chaplaincy or equivalent.
  • High standard of literacy – ability to speak, present and write with clarity
  • Eligible for Registration with UKBHC
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Degree in Chaplaincy, Theology, Religious Studies or other relevant field

Knowledge and Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant min 5 years pastoral experience since initial training
  • Relevant healthcare chaplaincy experience
  • Extensive knowledge of religious or spiritual needs issues in health care
  • Experience of working in multi-faith context
  • Demonstrable team-working experience: being willing to work constructively with other denominations, faiths, beliefs and hospital departments
  • Experience of working with families, children and young people
  • Experience of ecumenical and multi faith and belief cooperation
  • Understanding of healthcare issues and faith
  • Understand the issues in religious, spiritual, and pastoral care in perinatal and paediatric settings
  • Experience of supporting staff and volunteers
  • Understanding of the effects of illness and bereavement
  • Understanding of the difference between religious, spiritual and pastoral needs and care
  • Understanding of the effects of illness and bereavement with families and staff
  • Current line management experience
  • Organising large scale events
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of major world faiths and world views.
  • Knowledge of the potential effects on a family with a sick child and in loss /bereavement of a child

  • Able to prioritise and set aside work to manage more urgent situations where needed

  • Understand the issues, barriers and solutions in religious, spiritual, and pastoral care in perinatal and paediatric settings

  • Able to work using own initiative and autonomously without direct supervision
