Job overview

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and experienced Orthoptist to join our team of 7 Orthoptists, 11 ophthalmic technicians and 1 Optometrist in Dudley as a Highly Specialist Orthoptist. The Orthoptic department works closely with the Eye Department. The team is constantly striving for improvements in patient care and as a Band 7 you will be involved in transformation of our service provision.

The successful candidate will lead our Orthoptic Led Vision Screening programme and be involved in Specialist Paediatric, Ocular Motility and general Orthoptic adult and paediatric clinics. The role involves Glaucoma practitioner clinics. Training for the Glaucoma clinics will be provided if needed. Opportunities are also available for developing further extended role skills e.g. Medical Retina.

The department is an approved clinical placement centre for undergraduate Orthoptists so they will participate in the clinical supervision and teaching of Orthoptic students and other medical professionals. The role also involves supporting the Optical Services Manager in service management and appraisals.

A Diploma or Degree in Orthoptics and state registration with the HCPC is essential. Clinics are held at all 3 hospital sites and single-handed clinics in the Community. Main duties of the job

路 To carry out, as an autonomous practitioner, individually and as part of a team, advanced levels of Orthoptic investigation, assessment and treatment for patients referred to the Orthoptic Department from various hospital departments including Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Emergency Department, Maxillo-facial, Neurology, and from other health professionals such as GP鈥檚, School Health Advisors (SHAs) and Health Visitors.

路 To provide specialist Orthoptic expertise in the investigation and management of Ocular Motility disorders and other complex eye conditions. Communicating complex information to other health care professionals, consultants and GP鈥檚.

路 To be the Orthoptic lead for the Orthoptic Led School Vision Screening programme and Orthoptic assessment of children in Special Schools, organising and auditing the services.

路 To carry out Glaucoma Practitioner Clinics (following training if required) as part of the Glaucoma team, including assessment and advising on potential treatment changes where necessary.

路 To carry out additional extended roles as required by the department following appropriate training e.g. IVT injections To provide clinical supervision and teaching to Orthoptic Undergraduates and other health professionals.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Degree / Diploma in Orthoptics
  • HCPC registration
  • Teaching qualification/ BIOS Clinical Tutor course completion
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification in Glaucoma
  • Post graduate qualification in Medicine Exemptions

Knowledge and Training

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of highly specialist knowledge of the pathology, management and treatment of a wide range of Orthoptic conditions to include Stroke, Ocular Motility and Neuro Ophthalmology
  • Evidence of extensive relevant post graduate training and education and/ or equivalent specialist experience
Desirable criteria
  • Band 6/7 development programme completed
  • Completed clinical competency in an Orthoptic extended role or willing to undertake additional training/study to fulfil an extended role as required by the Department

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of carrying out School Vision screening and involvement in an Orthoptic led Vision Screening programme
  • Extensive experience of formal and informal teaching, coaching and supervision of a variety of health professionals and students
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of undertaking visual fields and other diagnostic tests
  • Clinical training and experience of an Orthoptic extended role to include Glaucoma practitioner

Communication & Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to communicate effectively and with sensitivity with patients and carers including those with learning and communication difficulties
  • Ability to work singlehanded and as part of a team
  • Able to confidently communicate with and develop good working relationships with staff at all levels in the organisation

Analytical & Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continued CPD to include evidence of completing audit and presentations and an interest in research
  • Committed to delivering high quality service and developing clinical practice based on reflection and evidence-based practice
  • Computer literate to enable inputting of data, analyse and present information

Planning & Organisational Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, both paediatric and adult, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and time available
  • Innovative in patient care and service delivery, evidence of initiating service improvements
  • Professional, punctual, reliable, flexible and self-motivated in approach to duties
  • Willing to work hours required to carry out job satisfactorily and support the team

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work in sometimes restrictive positions, reduced lighting and move light equipment in order to complete an investigation
  • Able to commute to meet the needs of the service
