Job overview
The post holder is responsible for delivering expert nursing care and providing highly specialised advice within the speciality of urology services and will lead, co-ordinate and evaluate the delivery of a specialist urology nursing service across primary, secondary and tertiary care. They will be the first point of contact for patients during investigation, diagnosis and treatment. They will provide information and support to patients and their families and act as the patients鈥 advocate throughout their cancer or non-cancer journey.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will support the Matron in ensuring high standards of nursing care are provided to all patients receiving care in the specialty.听
This post is a fixed term/ secondment post which will currently end on 30th September 2025.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for delivering highly specialised advice and nursing care within the speciality of the urology services and will lead, co-ordinate and evaluate the delivery of the specialist urology nursing service across primary, secondary and tertiary care. The post holder will be the first point of contact for patients during investigation, diagnosis and treatment for those patients referred to, and who are currently under, the care of the urology service.
They will provide information and support to patients and their families and act as the patients鈥 advocate throughout their cancer or non-cancer journey.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will support the Matron in ensuring high standards of nursing care are provided to all patients receiving care in the urology specialty. The CNS will be ward or department based and will also provide specialist education and training to staff in the multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will have responsibility for ensuring that her/his specialist service is reflective of the Trust Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and will support the Matron and Medical Service Head in achieving the KPIs relevant to her/his area of specialist care.
The post holder will provide professional advice and leadership to members of the multidisciplinary team and assist them by providing clinical knowledge and support to deliver elements of specialist care.

Person specification
Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
- RN or relevant part of NMC register (RSCN, RMN)
- Educated to 1st degree level or evidence of degree level working
Desirable criteria
- Counselling Course masters degree in relevant clinical practice /willingness to undertake
- Leadership development course
- Recognised chemotherapy course (Level 3)
- Nurse prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake
- Health Care Assessment qualification, or willingness to undertake
Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification
- Evidence of experience within the urology specialty
- Experience of working within an acute hospital
- Evidence of ward management experience/managing staff
- Experience of being able to prioritise workloads and delegate staff
- Evidence of ability to teach and assess
- Experience in patient involvement activities
- Good IT user skills to include experience of using hospital systems
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems
- Ability to prepare, write and present management reports, articles for publication and teaching sessions
- Evidence of use of audit/research methodologies
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of current clinical developments and professional issues affecting both nursing and midwifery and the wider disciplinary teams
- Skilled practitioner who can act as a role model
- Understanding of DGOH agendas, other developments; their benefits to the Trust and the nursing/midwifery profession
- Be knowledgeable about national policies and standards e.g. NSF NICE guidelines and their implications for service delivery
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of governance and risk management within clinical practice
Communication, Personal qualities & Interpersonal skills
Essential criteria
- Experience of close liaison with members of the multidisciplinary team
- Skilled in relating with others both within and outside the nursing/midwifery field and establishing effective communication
- Skilled in verbal and written communication
- Ability to negotiate and influence others
- Flexibility to cover working across sites and/or conduct home visits
