Job overview

This post is for a locum emergency consultant with an interest in Benign Upper GI Surgery at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS (UHBW). This post is an expansion of consultant numbers interested in Acute Biliary work.

The post, although is initially for 6 months there is a view to extension including being part of service redesign across all UHBW Surgery sites longer term.

The successful candidate should be trained in General Surgery with an interest in Upper GI surgery, the post will be part of the Upper GI service on the Weston General Hospital site, which includes elective and emergency commitments, and endoscopy. However, it is expected that the successful candidate will work across all UHBW sites, as needed by the service, as we work towards a fully integrated service across all UHBW sites.

Main duties of the job

Since integration with University Hospitals Bristol in 2020, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston have developed Weston ‘Front door’ services, and we have a strong SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) ethos, including integration with Hospital@Home services. In development of an acute biliary service both acute UHBW sites, we have been a member of the Royal College of Surgeons Chole-Quic4 programme and will continue to work collaboratively with the college in future years on this service improvement programme. This post is pivotal in the next stage of that process.

The post holder will have responsibilities to develop and contribute to the continuing education, including educational supervision of resident doctors, their own professional development and audit and research within the Division and Trust.

Applicants must be on the GMC Specialists Registrar or within six months of obtaining Specialist Registration at the time of interview.

The post-holders will have an on-call commitment 1in 8 subject to change.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview)
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (any college)
  • JAG accreditation in Upper GI Endoscopy or clear plan to achieve
Desirable criteria
  • Additional Postgraduate qualification
  • Higher Degree (i.e. MD or PhD)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in general surgery
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
  • Surgical experience in acute biliary sugery
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to start within 4-6 weeks

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty.
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to cancer services
  • Ability to perform benign Upper GI surgery
  • Ability to perform laparoscopic surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Broad range of IT skills
  • Subspecialty interest encourage

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
  • Positive approach to evidence based practice
  • Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation
  • Experience of organising audit.
