Job overview

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust are looking to appoint a Higher Level Pharmacy Technician - Dispensary and Medicines Optimisation based at either Stoke Mandeville or Wycombe Hospital. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician who would like to develop their clinical skills on the wards and their leadership skills by assisting in the day to day running of the dispensary to achieve their full potential working in a busy acute hospital setting.

The person appointed will support the Team Leader for Dispensary Services and the Senior Pharmacy Medicines Optimisation Technician in the implementation of agreed strategy changes and provide safe and effective care to patients and service users.

Technicians interested in this position are required to bring with them motivation, an enthusiasm to promote new ideas, a determination to succeed in a challenging environment, the ability to remain calm under pressure and a commitment to future developments in pharmacy services.

Main duties of the job

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Participate in the dispensing of medicines at ward level and in the dispensary in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Hold an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification and maintain this by participating in the ACPT rota in the main inpatient dispensary and as part of the delivery of medication via the satellites.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Assist the section leads in the management, development and delivery of a high quality, patient centred and cost-effective pharmacy service.

·ÌýÌýÌý Undertake Medicines Optimisation duties at ward-based level as per rota.

·ÌýÌýÌý Promote a culture of learning and development within the Pharmacy MOT and dispensary teams.Ìý

·ÌýÌýÌýÌý Follow all legal and departmental practices including SOPs, COSHH, Lifting and Handling Regulations and all Trust Policies and Procedures.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌý Be expected to contribute to the development of pharmaceutical services, and to promote the highest standards of professional practice, whilst always observing the "Statement upon Matters of Professional Conduct" issued by the General Pharmaceutical Council

· ÌýÌý Ensure good communication between ward-based pharmacy services, non-pharmacy healthcare professionals, inpatient dispensary, and procurement and distribution services to promote discharge planning and co-ordination to enhance contribution to the achievement of the Trust’s targets.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Completion of a GPhC accredited course
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Accredited Medicines Optimisation Technician (or willingness to undertake)
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician qualification (or willingness to undertake).
Desirable criteria
  • Practice Supervisor (PS)/Education Supervisor (ES)
  • Management/Leadership course

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of counselling patients
  • Experience of training other pharmacy staff
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital Pharmacy Experience
  • Experience of Medicines Optimisation at ward level

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Able to prioritise and manage own workload
  • Communicate effectively as part of a team
  • Able to recognise and embrace new ideas and developments and implement directly or support others to achieve
  • Prepared to attend any training sessions necessary for personal and service development
  • Good IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Able to complete medicines Reconciliation
  • Able to check PODs and transcribe medicines
  • Able to accuracy check validated prescriptions

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

  • Able to travel to other sites and off site as necessary
