About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and dynamic professional to take on the pivotal role of Antenatal & Newborn Screening Coordinator. In this role, you will bring highly developed specialist knowledge and extensive experience in antenatal and newborn screening, using your expertise to lead a multidisciplinary team and drive the delivery of exceptional care.
Main duties of the job
- Leadership & Coordination: Oversee all six antenatal and newborn screening programmes across the Trust, ensuring effective delivery, quality assurance, and robust failsafe mechanisms.
- Collaboration: Work closely with diverse teams, including ultrasound, fetal medicine, early pregnancy units, hearing screening, paediatrics, laboratories, Child Health Records Departments, tertiary centres, and quality assurance teams.
- Policy & Quality Management: Develop, implement, and audit policies, guidelines, and pathways, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to high standards.
- Performance Reporting: Provide regular updates on programme performance to NHS England screening commissioners, regional quality assurance teams, and Trust leadership.
- Family & Staff Support: Act as a vital member of the multidisciplinary team, offering guidance and support to families and staff involved in antenatal and newborn screening.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife
- 2 years practising as a midwife
- Evidence of professional development
- Counselling skills
Desirable criteria
- Counselling qualification
- Degree level education
Experience
Essential criteria
- Awareness of professional responsibilities
- Specialist knowledge and experience of antenatal and newborn screening programmes
- Able to make appropriate clinical decisions in view of recent research, informed choice, and individual circumstances
- Able to deliver bad news to patients in an appropriate/empathetic manner
- Knowledge of clinical governance and relevance to practice
Desirable criteria
- Able to demonstrate conducting annual appraisals
- Evidence of attendance on a counselling/breaking bad news course
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Awareness of current safety requirements; NSC, FASP, NICE and other relevant national guidelines
- Keen to support the Maternity Services Strategy, with particular regard to the quality of the patient journey
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels across the department and directorate both written and verbal
- Ability to teach and share knowledge
- Can demonstrate evidenced of involvement in service improvement
Desirable criteria
- Ability to demonstrate evidence of line management of non-midwifery staff, for example MSWs
- Has participated in research and audit
Key Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication skills: written/oral/non-verbal
- Flexible and receptive to change
- Able to work as part of a small team in a potentially high pressured and emotive environment
- IT experience, being able to use the necessary computerised reporting system and electronic patient records
- Highly motivated individual able to work under own initiative
- Ability to interpret statistics and utilise knowledge to help advise women regarding antenatal screening and diagnosis of fetal abnormalities
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Microsoft Excel / Word / PowerPoint
