Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an 8 session Specialty Doctor to join our Young Onset Dementia (YOD) team.
The Cardiff and Vale Young Onset Dementia Service is a post Primary Progressive Dementia diagnosis Service , who work primarily with patients and the families of patients aged under 65 diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease & variants, Fronto temporal dementia, Vascular dementia, Mixed dementia and Lewy Body dementia/Parkinson’s dementia.
The post-holder will be based in the Young Onset Dementia Centre in Barry Hospital and will work in the community and inpatient settings. The work will consist of assessments of emergency and routine psychiatric patients, together with ongoing care under the supervision of the Consultant. Duties will involve a spectrum of activities including history taking, assessment of mental states, electronic record keeping, preparation of discharge summaries and written communication with GPs following outpatient clinics and domiciliary visits.
The post-holder will provide support to a 14 bedded challenging behaviour inpatient YOD unit based in Barry Hospital. A significant amount of work is likely to be involved with patients who are or need to be detained under the Mental Health Act.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will need to be able to work closely with and on behalf of the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist for the YOD Team, within the Mental Health Services for Older People Directorate of the Mental Health Clinical Board.
The post-holder will work in the community and inpatient settings. The work will consist of assessments of emergency and routine psychiatric patients, together with ongoing care under the supervision of the Consultant. Duties will involve a spectrum of activities including history taking, assessment of mental states, electronic record keeping, preparation of discharge summaries and written communication with GPs following outpatient clinics and domiciliary visits.
The post-holder will provide support to St Barruc Ward, which has 14 beds and a respite bed. The ward is co-located with the community team, in Barry Hospital. A significant amount of work is likely to be involved with patients who are or need to be detained under the Mental Health Act.
The post-holder will work closely with a number of professionals in the team including CPNs, Dementia Care Advisor, Dietitian, SLT, OT, Physiotherapist, Psychologist and Family Support Workers. The post-holder will regularly participate and contribute to weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
- MB BS or recognised equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Experience in working in mental health services in UK.
- Section 12 (2) recognition under MHA 1983 or qualification to become Section 12 approved
Experience
Essential criteria
- Four years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, OR equivalent experience / competencies*
- Experience of working in mental health services in UK.
