Job overview

We are looking for a motivated individual with experience of respiratory medicine in particular COPD who woul be challenged with variety in their role and is keen to learn new specialist skills to join the Cardiff and Vale COPD and Home Oxygen service based in the University Hospital Llandough.

The COPD and Home Oxygen service is a multidisciplinary team comprising Specialist nurses, Physiotherapists and Occupational therapist.

The COPD and home Oxygen team is a constantly evolving service, so flexibility and a desire to learn is essential, evidence-based practice is key to our practice.

We offer early supported discharge and admission avoidance to patients exacerbating with their COPD.

Our keyworker system allows us to manage our caseloads by working in an interdisciplinary way, learning new skills to enable us to take aspects of each of our professional roles to facilitate a truly holistic service.

You will need to be able to work autonomously, visiting patients in their own homes, often dealing with patients who are exacerbating and acutely unwell. Alongside this you will need to have a keen interest in providing education surrounding their disease, self-management plans and rehabilitation.

Our Oxygen patients are seen both in clinic and at home, further training in taking ear lobe gases and interpretation of the results will be given.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Respiratory Specialist Nurse - COPD + Home Oxygen Service

  • Suitable candidates will be keen to extend their existing knowledge of respiratory medicine, in particular COPD and oxygen assessment and prescription.
  • Communication skills will be essential to facilitate teaching patients and their families in all aspects of the care and management of their chest condition.
  • Basic physio techniques such as sputum clearance, breathing control and basic exercise programme, OT techniques such as management of panic/anxiety and teaching practical adaptations to daily tasks to help in the management of breathlessness will be just some of the skills you will learn supported and supervised by the relevant professionals.
  • All Home Oxygen orders come through our service, advice to other professionals from both primary and secondary care on correct /safe process for ordering oxygen and checking completed prescription forms prior to submission is a key role.
  • Participation in twice weekly CRRU led oxygen assessment clinics and weekly ambulatory assessment clinics on a rota basis is required.
  • Interpretation of the results and appropriate prescription of oxygen is an essential part of the role, full support is given by other CRRU members and Respiratory consultants.
  • Housebound patients are seen at home and we also visit to do a mandatory safety check post installation.
