Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably qualified Clinical Scientists to join the Rare Disease Service within the All Wales Medical Genomics Service working flexibly for 37.5 hours per week. These are permanent, full-time posts based at Canolfan Iechyd Genomig Cymru / Wales Genomic Health Centre.

The post holder will support the delivery of our rare disease services including expanded delivery of WES and WGS based services .

Experienced applicants without registration will be considered and appointed appropriately until qualifications are achieved.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of genetic services for a range of inherited disorders guided by clearly defined policies and procedures.

The post holder will have managerial responsibility for an additional component of the Genetics service (e.g. Quality, Training, the supervision / training of designated technical staff). The post holder will undertake service developments in conjunction with the head of the section.

The All Wales Medical Genetics Service (AWMGS) provides a comprehensive clinical genetics and laboratory service clinical genetics services to the 3 million residents of Wales.

Welsh Government and the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee are investing in the All Wales Medical Genomics Service to ensure patient equity across the UK in accessing genetic testing methodologies.听

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good BSc Hons in Biological / Medical Science (or equivalent)
  • Clinical Scientist Registration (HCPC)
  • Demonstration of commitment to sitting FRCPath part 1
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant PHD
  • Experience of managing people or services in laboratory environment
  • Proven ability to manage workload including the monitoring of key performance indicators
  • Completion of FRCPath Part 1

Special Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of genetics of common disorders served by the laboratory and the UK Genetic testing Network (UKGTN), and/or specialist genetic services
  • Knowledge of the bioinformatic tools necessary for the analysis of genetic data (e.g. microarrays, DNA sequence data, MLPA data鈥)
  • Knowledge of the application and significance of Quality Assurance and Clinical Governance measures in Lab Genetics

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of development of new techniques and troubleshooting existing assays
  • Highly developed laboratory skills for precise micro-manipulation of clinical samples
  • Data analysis skills e.g. use of mutation surveyor, NGS software, in silico analysis packages, FISH and karyotyping (as appropriate)
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Sufficient experience of clinical genetic / specialist genetic services
  • Evidence of scientific innovation / achievement in clinical diagnostics
  • Evidence of research and development capability
