Job overview

A permanent, part-time vacancy has arisen for a Healthcare Science Assistant in the Pathology Specimen Reception at Furness General Hospital, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

Pathology is at the heart of healthcare, Pathology Reception is the starting point of every specimen's analytical journey, from inpatient to outpatient everything starts with us.

You will be joining a busy team providing an essential Blood Sciences and Microbiology service for patients in the North Lancashire and South Cumbria area.

This is a part-time vacancy working 18.75 hours per week (Monday 17:00 - 20:00, Wednesday 09:00-13:00, Thursday 09:00-13:00, Friday 09:00-17:00 (1 hour unpaid break), Saturday 09:00-12:00 on a 1 in 4 rota)

Main duties of the job

This is an interesting and challenging position and offers the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to patient care. Your primary role will be in the specimen reception expediting the processing of specimens that require analysis within a short time frame.

The responsibilities of this job are to perform clerical and reception duties within the laboratory. Receiving samples for laboratory testing to check that all details of the request forms and samples match and to enter them into our laboratory system. To act as the first point of reference for enquiries into the department and assisting patients with general enquiries both on the telephone and face to face.

You will also be required to welcome and offer advice to patients arriving in the department to have blood collected in the Phlebotomy clinic.

You must be reliable and able to work under pressure to extremely high standards.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised, methodical and highly motivated individual.

Full training will be given for all aspects of the role so previous experience of working in similar roles is not essential.

You will be required to participate in the bank holiday, evening and weekend rota as required.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 3 GCSEs or equivalent including English
  • Good General Education
Desirable criteria
  • A Levels or equivalent
  • NVQ 2 in clinical laboratory support
  • ECDL

Experience
