Job overview

The Hive based within the Derwent Unit is a service which is recovery-focused in approach and which encompasses a main day service and recreation service.

We are currently seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Fitness Instructor to provide assessments and training sessions within our on site gym, for service users who are being cared for within our adult, acute, inpatient wards.

If you have a passion for supporting people who have mental health needs and understand the positivity that exercise can bring to recovery in mental health, then this post may be for you.

The post is 2 days per week, working 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (weekend work is also considered) in a newly-equipped gym, with support from the wider team, clinical supervision, an annual appraisal and development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a suitably experienced Band 3 Fitness Instructor to join the team at the newly built Derwent Unit.
The Fitness Instructor will work alongside the multi-disciplinary team in the Hive and also on the acute inpatient wards.
You will work with patients to provide therapeutic meaningful activities to support individuals' recovery and will be committed to delivering high quality, person-centred care within the gym environment promoting fitness and wellbeing.
We are an evolving team which is open to change and developing new ways of working and have a positive profile within the Trust and with service users and carers.
This role will involve facilitating and reviewing referrals, managing risks and communication to all professionals. Ensuring safety of gym equipment and assessing patient needs within the gym environment. It is anticipated that this will be achieved through MDT work, representing the team at unit level and within the Trust.

Education /Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fitness Instructor Qualification at level 3, Relevant qualifications : BTEC, City & Guilds, NVQ3 or equivalent
  • Relevant experience of a fitness instructor
Desirable criteria
  • First aid qualification
  • Customer care training

Experience / Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of independently planning, preparing and facilitating groups in specified activity
  • Awareness of mental health issues
  • Technical knowledge required for specific work area
  • Physical fitness required for leading a range of activities requiring accuracy
  • Planning, organisational and problem solving skills
  • Experience of training people in fitness programmes
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a mental health setting
  • Experience of customer care
  • Have a range of activity skills within or beyond specific area of work
