Job overview

Due to an exciting expansion of services, we are seeking to recruit 5 Consultant Anaesthetists to join our dynamic and growing anaesthesia team. We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals with specialist interests in Upper GI, Perioperative Medicine, Vascular, Obstetrics and Simulation. Ìý

There will also be opportunities in Urology and Gynaecology, as well as upper and lower limb arthroplasty work.
We are a friendly and dynamic department with 84 Consultant Anaesthetists, 36 Specialty Doctors, Specialists and 48 Trainees. We deliver a comprehensive anaesthetic service for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and surrounding areas, allowing the successful candidates a varied and fulfilling career.


We are a motivated and supportive group and were one of the first departments to achieve RCOA accreditation (ACSA) demonstrating our dedication to providing an outstanding quality of care and our enthusiasm to engage with national projects. Applications from candidates who are in the process of having submitted a CESR application and is under consideration by the GMC within six months at the time of interview, will be considered.


UHDB is one of only 7 Trusts nationally with more than 50 operating theatres. Last year we undertook almost 33,700 planned surgical operations across 57 operating theatres. ÌýWe carry out more than 140 elective procedures each working day across a huge variety of surgical specialities.

Main duties of the job

The job plan will be agreed between the appointee & the Assistant Clinical Director, on behalf of the Executive Medical Director.

The duties will be subject to review from time to time in light of the changing requirements of the service. ÌýIf alterations to the duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee & the Assistant Clinical Director with the approval of the Clinical Director.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Possession of FRCA or equivalent qualification (i.e. FCARCSI)
  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register (CCT or Portfolio Pathway) OR be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview and entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement OR evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration / Portfolio application (MUST be provided prior to interview)
  • Substantive experience of working in the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
  • Post CCT fellowship

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development & the requirements of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
  • Attended a management course for consultants

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising F1, F2 ST trainees
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course
