An exciting opportunity has arisen for a keen and motivated individual to become the Cancer Improvement Manager. Cancer Services is a department where skilled and valued staff work in a culture of appreciation, compassion, and continuous improvement.
The successful applicant will provide direct support to the Cancer Performance Manager and will be responsible for making improvements to cancer pathways, therefore a degree level management qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience is essential.
The successful applicant will collaborate with the Service Lines to identify and achieve improvement against the Cancer Waiting Times (CWT) standards, so communication skills are vital. The role is varied and interesting but there will be multiple ongoing projects, which will require excellent time management skills.

Communication skills are vital because of the requirement to collaborate with the Service Lines, Primary Care, and the Peninsula Cancer Alliance to enable service improvement.Ìý
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification***
Main duties of the job
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Ensure delays in patients’ cancer pathways are identified and escalated through the daily Cancer Huddle.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Work autonomously to deliver service improvement across multiple cancer sites simultaneously.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Collaborate with the Digital Automation team to streamline processes within Cancer Services and the cancer pathways.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Build and maintain strong working relationships with the administrative and clinical teams across the Trust to improve cancer performance.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Ensure robust links between improvement initiatives and projects within the Trust to prevent duplication.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Benchmark and learn from other organisations and share best practice pathways.Ìý

Service improvement:
Ìý
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Deliver sustainable change to the cancer pathways which improve Trust performance against the CWT standards and improve patient outcomes.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Use process mapping, and demand and capacity tools, to understand the current state of the cancer pathways.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Design and undertake on-site observations and patient tracking as part of service review.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Apply appropriate service improvement tools and techniques to improve the current situation e.g., PDSA model.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Deliver cancer pathway improvements as dictated by the Peninsula Cancer Alliance, such as the Best Practice Timed Pathways (BPTPs).
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Collaborate with other Trusts within the Peninsula to reduce variation in cancer performance across the region.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Collaborate with the Digital Automation Team and use Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technology to modernise processes and procedures.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Facilitate all aspects of service improvement projects including planning, delivery, and evaluation.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Monitor progress against plans and implement changes to ensure deliver to time, quality and cost.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Challenge and support teams to ensure that changes are patient focused.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Create Standard Operating Procedures, aligned to the Cancer Operational Policy, to document service developments and to facilitate training.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Use Cancer Alliance Funding diligently to enhance cancer services and pathway developments.

Information management:

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Work closely with Performance Information to create reports, which will involve providing and receiving complex information.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Analyse and interpret raw data from iPM, Somerset Cancer Register and other local and national sources and produce reports, providing options and recommendations for change.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Select and use appropriate IT software (e.g., Excel, Visio, PowerPoint) to obtain, analyse and present information.
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Host the weekly Cancer Performance Improvement Meeting and ensure the Cancer Action Plan is updated, then shared with a wide audience across organisational boundaries.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Management / service improvement qualification at a degree level or equivalent demonstrable experience
Desirable criteria
- • Willing to complete training courses for development within the role

- • Create a reporting mechanism to ensure there is oversight and assurance that progress is being made by stakeholders who are accountable for completing specific actions
- • Use communication skills to support staff through improvement projects. Use coaching and mentoring techniques to support stakeholders in reaching their potential.
- • Anticipate barriers and challenging responses from stakeholders and modify communication style to improve understanding.
- • Communicate sensitive information about performance relating to tracking patients, data collection and coordinating issues
- • Communicate clearly and sensitively with patients, carers, support groups and health professionals at every level to ensure effective service redesign that improves patient experience.

- • Demonstrable experience using Microsoft packages including Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio
Desirable criteria
- • Demonstrable experience of working across organisational boundaries
- • Understanding of Cancer Waiting Times standards would be advantageous.
