Job overview

Job Purpose:

Ìý

  • Provide a range of clinical technical support services within the Clinical & Radiation Physics Group, which is part of the Healthcare Science Directorate.
  • Manage calibration records for radiation monitoring instrumentation
    Manage the maintenance and calibration of radiation monitoring equipment
  • Manage statutory records for radioactive sources
  • Assist in the management of radioactive sources
  • Perform radiation monitoring measurements on complex
    x-ray and associated systems
  • Provide scientific technical services in support of Nuclear Medicine
  • Assist in the provision of occupational and environmental dosimetry service
  • Assist in the provision of radiation protection services
  • Technical support to the Dose Reference Group and Chair in collation and review of data, producing reports and meeting organisation.
  • Provide technical services for radiation protection and diagnostic radiology
  • Provide a number of departmental tasks including the organisation and minute taking for local and senior Trust meetings (e.g. Radiation Safety Committee)

Salary is qualification dependant, can appoint as Band 4 as long as approved and appropriate qualifications and experience.

Main duties of the job

1.1.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Perform daily technical administration for occupational and environmental monitoring.

1.2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Issue and receipt of occupational and environmental monitors.

1.3.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Liaise with the Approved Dosimetry Service.

1.4.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Liaise with staff in regard to new staff for monitoring, non-returns and resolve any routine queries regarding occupational and environmental monitoring

1.5.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Organise calibration of radiation monitoring instruments including diagnostic, protection, and contamination monitoring equipment and liaise with providers.

1.6.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Organise and assist in local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation.

1.7.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Perform local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation

1.8.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Investigate and perform tests on faulty monitoring equipment and arrange repairs where necessary

1.9.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Perform regular checks on contamination monitoring equipment between calibrations

1.10.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Perform Quality Control measurements on wide range of complex x-ray and associated devices

1.11.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Analyse test results, produce reports of the findings, present and discuss these with other scientific staff.

1.12.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Maintain records for Clinical Trial activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

2.1.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Communicate with customers, NHS Trust staff, non-NHS healthcare customers, service providers (UKHSA etc.).

2.2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Liaise and co-operate with other scientific, medical and other professional staff. participate in work area, Group, Directorate and other meetings as required.

3.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý QUALITY AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

3.1.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Follow procedures for record keeping and maintain accurate records of all work carried out.

3.2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Participate in Directorate and Trust-wide corporate and clinical governance initiatives as appropriate.

3.3.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Be familiar with relevant quality management systems, procedures and work instructions. Propose changes to quality documentation for own work areas.

3.4.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Support the maintenance and development of the accredited quality system.

3.5.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Be familiar with the Trust’s adverse incident reporting procedure.

3.6.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Participate in audit and review of the service.

4.1.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Manage and prioritise own workload.

4.2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Provide general technical administrative support

4.3.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Work flexibly to meet service requirements this will require some tasks to be performed outside the directorates core working hours. For example routine contamination monitoring is performed at the end of the extended working day (18.30).

4.4.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided.

4.5.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Work safely at all times and in particular when working with sources of ionising radiations.

4.6.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý The working environment may require the post holder to occasionally have exposure to unpleasant working conditions.

4.7.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Support training of other staff.

4.8.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Provide administrative support when needed to departmental and directorate activities including audits under the departmental quality system, use of the Trust asset database (eQuip) and the ordering of goods, and services (EPROC).

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Advanced IT skills; advanced analysis using Microsoft excel and access
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in the following areas: Radiation Protection, Diagnostic Radiology Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics
  • Ability to work without direct supervision under DOP
  • Detailed understanding of the use of unsealed sources in healthcare
  • Detailed knowledge & understanding of testing methodologies for ionising radiation imaging equipment
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (eg, IRR, IR(ME)R, Health & Safety, COSHH)

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to A-level standard or equivalent
  • Degree equivalent level of knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • On the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists (VRCT)
  • Completed PTP training scheme (or in house equivalent)
  • Degree in Physics or related subject
