Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the ophthalmology department within Hampshire Hospitals. The ophthalmology department spans across 3 sites and this role is working predominately at the Basingstoke and North Hampshire site.
Each site has an outpatient setting, day case theatres, minor ops rooms, lasers, injection rooms and pre assessment areas.

The medical retina service has a robust virtual screening program for follow up patients.

This post is for an Ophthalmologist with a subspecialist interest in medical retina. Someone who will help to lead the medical retina service at the Basingstoke site and to continue to develop the service to ensure excellent patient care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will: -

  • Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standards of care.
  • Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
  • Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients, and A&E
  • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care.
  • Offer support and leadership to junior medial colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Working for our organisation

Our service configuration includes a dedicated Eye Day Case Unit (EDCU) at Basingstoke Hospital, a dedicated Ophthalmic Imaging Technician, as well as community eye services that support glaucoma referral refinement and Minor Eye Conditions (MECs) being dealt with closer to home. We also have a specialised theatre at Andover War Memorial Hospital, as well as operating on cases in our day surgery units on both main hospital sites. Just one of our departments saw over 25,000 outpatient attendances in 2018/19 and nearly 5,000 inpatient and day case operations. Each of our existing consultants has a strong general Ophthalmology background with sub-specialty interests in medical retina, glaucoma, uveitis, anterior segment, oculoplastic, and paediatric ophthalmology, and strabismus.

Person specification

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • Hold Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Ophthalmology or equivalent or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT or equivalent by date of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship level training in medical retina

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experienced independent in cataract surgery
  • Experienced general Ophthalmologist
  • Subspecialty training in medical retina
  • Completed a full training program
  • Experience of and participation in clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of risk management

Skills & Ability

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and able to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and all levels of staff
  • Teaching/presentation skills
  • Good IT skills
