Job overview

Consultant in general paediatrics. This 10 PA (programmed activity) post is in general paediatrics covering general paediatric acute assessment and inpatient work, level 1+ neonates, safeguarding, outpatients and on call. The post will include a small number of resident night shifts. Subspecialty interest is welcomed and may be accommodated within the job as part of the outpatient provision. The post holder will be part of a large integrated paediatric department with 13.75 WTE in the general paediatric team which is integrated with the community team (3.8WTE). This post has become available as the current post holder is relocating overseas.

Main duties of the job

The post will involve:
1. Ìý ÌýConsultant of the week – working on the acute ward, admissions, day assessment and GP referrals
2. Ìý ÌýOn call – a resident evening shift followed by on call from home covering all paediatric areas. There is an expectation that the post holder will be able to return to hospital immediately and live within 10 miles or 30 minutes travel from the hospital.
3. Ìý ÌýNeonatal shifts – managing the neonatal level 1+ ward, labour ward and transitional care unit
4. Ìý ÌýSafeguarding shifts –undertaking child protection medical assessments
5. Ìý ÌýResident night shifts – at middle grade level with second consultant at home, allowing senior decision making at night and helping to support gaps in the service
6. Ìý ÌýFlow shifts – working on the assessment unit and helping to keep the flow of patients away from the emergency department and the ward as needed.Ìý
7. Ìý ÌýOutpatient clinics – general paediatric outpatient clinics

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) Paediatrics or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification in child health or related subjects, education or quality improvement

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broad training in general paediatrics
  • Level 3 Neonatal Experience and Training
  • Ambulatory Paediatric Experience
  • Training in developmental and community paediatrics appropriate for a general paediatrician
  • Safeguarding training and experience - level 3
Desirable criteria
  • Previous work at consultant level
  • SPIN or other subspecialty qualification

Clinical Skills & Ability

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents and staff
  • Ability to work with and to lead a team
  • Understanding of the importance of multi-disciplinary working in delivery of patient care
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate participation in audit and research
  • Demonstrate ability to manage change and an understanding of the principles of service improvement

Research & Teaching Skills
