Main duties of the job
A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly experienced and motivated senior palliative care Nurse to join our Supportive and Palliative Care Team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). This Lead Nurse role is a permanent Band 8a post with responsibility to lead the team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and develop our evolving clinical service for patients at UHS.Ìý

You will manage a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and lead the clinical and strategic development of the service alongside the Lead Consultant and Lead Nurse for Palliative and End of Life Care. ÌýWe have a well-established multi professional clinical team comprising B7 and B6 CNSs, 5 Palliative Medicine Consultants and an Associate Specialist alongside Specialty Doctors and our dedicated administrative staff. ÌýOur service offers a broad range of clinical experience across all major clinical specialties with well-developed presence in emergency care, critical care areas, across surgery and medicine as well as the cancer centre. UHS is a large teaching hospital with many opportunities for specialist palliative care to positively impact patient's care and experience.Ìý

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:
Promote clinical excellence and drive improvements for patients with palliative care needs and those important to them.Ìý
Ìý
Develop our service in line with Trust aims and priorities and in accordance with best practice and evidence based care.Ìý
Ìý
Provide expert clinical care for patients with complex palliative care needs referred to the service and for those reviewed as part of a more proactive model. ÌýThe post holder is expected to be an independent prescriber or working towards this.
Ìý
Lead a CNS team developing individuals and the service and promoting excellent patient care in a 7 day a week service.Ìý
Ìý
Set and maintain standards of care leading on clinical governance and risk for the service ensuring best practice is maintained and quality improvements are embedded.Ìý
Ìý
Work collaboratively with the Lead Consultant and other senior leaders to develop the service to meet the needs of patients and the Trust.
Ìý
Participate in the growing research programme and raise the profile of the service at the local, national and international level.Ìý
Ìý
Work collaboratively with the nursing and medical leads for palliative and end of life care on strategic end of life care matters and deputise in Trust and regional meetings when needed.
Foster close working relationships with other organisations in the region including hospices, community palliative care teams, other acute hospitals and the ICB.

Be a positive role model demonstrating exemplary professionalism in leadership and specialist palliative care clinical practice.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic and innovative senior palliative care nurse with a passion for working within the acute hospital environment. ÌýThe post holder will be self-motivated, an excellent team player and a proven leader. ÌýTo be successful you will need to be expert in clinical practice, Ìýdemonstrate exemplary communication skills and have a track record in education and the development of others as well as a strong interest in research and commitment to quality improvement.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Registered nurse on relevant part of NMC register
- Educated to master’s degree level or equivalent level of knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant speciality training, experience or portfolio
- Post graduate speciality specialist training.
- Evidence of on-going personal and professional development
- Extensive clinical experience of working within chosen speciality
- Previous experience of working at band 7 level
- Post Registration experience and proven evidence of leadership or change management
- Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives / pressures
- Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
Desirable criteria
- Psychological Assessment course
- Teaching and presentation aptitude or courses
