Job overview

We are looking for a Consultant Intensivist to join our critical care team at Hampshire Hospitals. We are a friendly, diverse team, with a range of special interests who work together, both clinically and educationally, toÌý
deliver outstanding care to our patients.

We welcome applicants on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine alone, as well as those trained in a complementary specialty, which may include Anaesthetics, Acute or Emergency Medicine or another medical specialty. Applicants with equivalent training as evidenced by possession of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (Combined Programmes) [CESR(GP)] may also apply, as may candidates currently going through the process of obtaining equivalence.

We welcome applications from experienced Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine, who may be looking to relocate to Hampshire, as well as those approaching the end of their training programmes. We would be happyÌý
to discuss relocation expenses that may arise following successful appointment.

Our critical care facilities include a 9 bed ICU/HDU at RHCH (Winchester) and 18 Critical Care beds at BNHH (Basingstoke). Both units have recently undergone extensive refurbishment to expand the side-room capacity on each site. Both units contribute to ICNARC and are active participants within the Thames Valley and WessexÌýAdult Critical Care Network

Main duties of the job

This post is a substantive post for a consultant based on the Winchester site and will maintain the on-call at 1:8. ICU sessions will be based on the Winchester ICU/HDU with a 5-day week on a 1:8 rotation.

The posts is a 10 PA contract. Critical Care work would be 5 PA (including on call) for those applying with a complementary specialty, and 8.5 PA for those with single-specialty training. The successful candidate’s complementary specialty (where applicable) will constitute the remaining PA to make up 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) in a contract totalling 10 PA. There is potential for more work in critical care or theÌý
complementary specialty up to total 12PA on negotiation. Supporting professional activities (SPA) allowance starts at 1.5 PA, but we encourage individuals to develop roles and opportunities outside the department,
some of which may be recognised in extra SPA time. Like all appointments to the Trust, successful candidates may be required to work at any of the hospital sites if the clinical service requires this. For candidatesÌý interested in developing or maintaining an interest in Transfer Medicine, there may be the opportunity to work with the regional Thames Valley & Wessex Transfer Service as part of the role. In addition, opportunities toÌý
work within medical education, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels can be explored.

Working for our organisation

Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.

The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors. The Council of Governors represent the interests of their constituencies and influence the future plans of the Foundation Trust.
