Job overview

This post is a band 6 developing in to a band 7 once competencies have been achieved.

This is an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse who has an interest in Neurology and the management of Headaches. Part of the Neurology Specialist Nurse team . This role offers learning opportunities, career development and the opportunity to manage a case load of patients and assist in procedure clinics.

Main duties of the job

The Headache Specialist Nurse will establish and lead the delivery of a service for adults with headache disorders that aligns with nationally recognised protocols and policies, including NICE quality standards, to ensure that adult patients receive the best possible care according to their needs.

The post holder will provide professional, high quality co-ordinated and holistic care to adult patients, aiming to improve the management of their long term condition within agreed protocols.

The post holder will be an expert resource, providing clinical advice to patients, families and colleagues.

The post holder will provide care, support, advice and education in hospital and at home where necessary, for adults with a diagnosis of chronic headache and headache disorders.

The post holder will lead regular nurse led clinics undertaking patient assessments, devising treatment plans, and ensuring appropriate clinical investigations and referrals are made

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Adult Nurse
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Completed or undertaking a qualification in Neurology
  • Evidence of continuing post registration professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Non-medical prescribing course
  • Teaching/Mentorship qualification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate up to date knowledge, skills and expertise in the speciality of headache disorders/neurology including national policies and guidelines
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and demonstrates a commitment to Multidisciplinary working.
  • Ability to plan and run nurse led clinics
  • Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats
  • Prioritises own workload
  • Understanding of the holistic needs of adult patients with headache disorders
  • Excellent problem solving, negotiation, analytical skills
  • Able to deliver teaching sessions and presentations

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years relevant post registration experience in adult medicine / neurology nursing at Band 6
  • Experience in dealing with adults with headache disorders.
  • Previous experience in teaching of patients and staff
  • Awareness of delivering research/evidence- based practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding of relevant national strategy/policy and how this relates to the service.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in audit and evaluation
  • Previous case holding experience

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy
