The post holders will provide relief security cover within the security team, responding appropriately to staff, patients and members of the public.

Candidates must demonstrate a willingness to be flexible and work as part of a team; must be physically fit to perform the duties and have experience in a security service environment. Good assertion skills, good customer care skills, effective written and verbal communication skills are essential. The successful applicant should also have experience of working with the general public.

Applicant's will be required to have the SIA certification or Prison/Police/Military equivalent in control and restraint.

Main duties of the job

To provide a professional security service that will protect, advise, investigate when needed and to act in the creation and maintenance of a safe and crime free environment for staff, patients and visitors.

To ensure that staff, patients and visitors are assisted, at all times and in any appropriate matters, in a manner that reflects positively on the Trust and the service.

The post holder will need to be alert to their surroundings at all times and show a capability to 鈥渢hink on their feet鈥 and make independent decisions unsupervised, to situations that evolve quickly and often without any warning, they must be able to remain calm under pressure be decisive and, where required, be assertive with compassion.

The post holder may be called upon by staff to provide advice on crime reduction, personal safety concerns or provide assistance in any number of situations through to giving directions to members of the public.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role of Hospital Safety Officer will be responsible for the following:

Principle Job Duties/Key Performance Areas:

  • The post holder will work as part of a team to provide an effective operational internal security service to the Trust.
  • To provide and to contribute to, a first-class customer care service to all users of the Trust.
  • To provide a protective escort for patients, staff, or relatives between Trust buildings out-of-hours, or where there is a particular need. In relation to these requests, to assist in such a manner that reflects positively on the Trust and minimises any distress felt by potentially vulnerable persons.
  • To assist, where reasonable, any request from management that supports the function of the department and/or assists in the effective delivery of patient care including any persons holding that role in a temporary or 鈥榓cting鈥 capacity.
  • To ensure that all calls for assistance made through the Emergency Call 鈥5555鈥 service are dealt with immediately and follow the incident through to the most satisfactory conclusion possible, requesting support from the emergency services where appropriate.听听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听
  • To be up to date with the knowledge of policies and procedures for security and have the basic knowledge and understanding of common law.
  • To assist, where appropriate, patients, staff or visitors
  • To be proactive in assisting persons who are threatened with physical assault.
  • To respond to all alarms. To ensure such alarms are attended to, prioritise these alarms where necessary, so that appropriate action is taken such that injury, loss of life or damage to Trust property is minimised.
  • To assist in and play an active role in the event of a major incident, ensuring that all appropriate persons are informed, including the emergency services where necessary. To ensure that all necessary duties are carried out under the instruction of the Trust or from the emergency services, or according to acknowledged policy and/or recognised procedures.
  • To complete all relevant reports and documents and proceeded accordingly in line with policy & procedures and any other reasonable request.

Professional

  1. To provide a service that supports staff, patients or visitors that are victims of crime, giving them appropriate advice and keeping them informed of any developments in investigations by security staff and/or in conjunction with the police.
  2. To help investigate and log all incidents reported to the Hospital Safety team.
  3. To be able to research and analyse crime on the Hospital Safety team reporting system
  4. To call for appropriate assistance, at all times, where Hospital Safety officers are unable to bring matters to a conclusion that is satisfactory to all parties involved in an incident.
  5. To detain any person under common law and in line with current trust policy and procedure, where appropriate.
  6. To accept lost and found property on site out of hours, including money, and to ensure it鈥檚 appropriate safekeeping. To ensure this system is administrated in a reliable and professional manner and that all reasonable steps are taken to reunite this property with its legitimate owner.听 To ensure procedures are followed so that any audit of this system would reflect well on the department and the integrity of its security staff.
  7. To adhere to trust uniform policy and be off smart appearance

Administrative

  • To keep an accurate and complete log of duties performed during a period of duty.
  • To ensure all incidents are recorded accurately and in detail, using the Internal Hospital Safety Team Incident reporting system
  • To ensure that all incidents involving restraint are recorded using the Trusts incident reporting system
  • To ensure that all administrative and record-keeping systems required by management are adhered to and kept neatly and diligently. To ensure that such systems kept for other departments, out-of-hours are kept to a level of competence and completeness that reflects well on the department and enhances its reputation in the Trust.
  • To take custody of lost property ensuring documentation is completed and lost property is transferred to the general office.

Communication

  1. To deal with all calls in a sensible order of priority, assisting where appropriate and giving the caller a courteous explanation in the case of any delays.
  2. Where there is any uncertainty relating to the appropriate reporting authority, to ensure that the Hospital Safety team Supervisor/Manager is aware of events and circumstances so that he/she is able to make an informed decision.
  3. To provide advice to all levels of the organisation.

Crime Prevention

  • Undertake internal and external security patrols as required using diester procedures.
  • Secure and locking of various departments on request.
  • To establish the identity of all persons within restricted areas within the Trust鈥檚 premises who are not wearing an appropriate Trust ID badge or who are behaving in such a manner, or of such an appearance, to draw the attention of a responsible officer.

Health and Fire Safety Support

  1. To be proactive in ensuring that any unsatisfactory conditions, within the Trust鈥檚 premises, that have the potential to cause damage, injury or loss of life are reported through the untoward incident reporting system in a timely and professional manner. That any such conditions are clearly marked out, where appropriate, to bring attention to these risks and to ensure that, wherever possible, the risks are minimised.
  2. To attend, when possible, all fire alerts, and provide support to the Trust fire team.
  3. To assist in ensuring that all firefighting equipment is in place, fully functional and unobstructed. Whilst patrolling, to ensure that all fire points are checked and that any conditions that could compromise the ability of the Trust鈥檚 physical fire detection equipment is reported to the Trust fire officer in a timely and professional manner.
  4. Whilst patrolling, to record any obstructions in corridors, fire exits and fire paths that are contrary to fire regulations. To report these to the fire officer and on an untoward incident report.

Physical Security Systems

  1. To assist and advise, as appropriate, in the management of the physical measures and systems brought in by the Trust to restrict access into, or around, the premises. To ensure that any interference, or damage to, these systems is investigated and resolved in such a manner that patients, staff or visitors are not placed at risk and that property belonging to these persons, or the Trust, is kept as safe as possible.
  2. To assist, as appropriate, in the management of the integrated system of access control, CCTV and Trust ID badges. To ensure that, within this system, everything reasonable is done to ensure the integrity of the site and the safety of staff.听 To ensure the effective and efficient use of these systems to investigate and to prevent crime.
  3. To transcribe minutes for court proceedings for security CCTV information.

All team members are to have a clear understanding of the trusts Policy & Procedures on Information Management relating to:

  • DPA/GDPR
  • Health & Safety
  • CCTV & Control Room
  • Information Security
  • Freedom of Information

Including all other policies in line with the Information Commissioners Office

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 鈥 Physically fit to complete Personal Safety in Conflict Resolution, Restraint,/Breakaway Techniques as part of Mandatory training

  • 鈥 Accredited Security Qualification NVQ level 2 or willing to work towards
  • 鈥 Security/Police/Armed Forces related qualification
