Specialist Clinical Fellowship in Pain Management- Under the GMC IMG sponsorship scheme

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is offering a unique opportunity for suitably qualified International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to gain invaluable UK training experience through the two-year clinical fellowship program in pain management, through the GMC International Medical Graduate sponsorship scheme.

This fellowship will suit post graduate doctors who have chosen a career in Pain management and would like to pursue specialist training in the UK. Placement in the Anesthetic Department can be included, based on training needs. Candidates should have a Post-Graduate Qualification in Anesthesia and Post Graduate Qualification in Pain Management (Clinical Experience and training equivalent to Advanced Specialist Training in Pain Management).

The training will be focused on the full range of clinical activity in Pain management, including all aspects acute and chronic pain, pain management procedures, working with the wider multi-disciplinary teams, supporting other specialties and primary care in pain management through education and training. The candidate can be considered for additional training in anesthesia to support FRCA exams. For the motivated candidate, guidance will be provided to explore the possibility for seeking further specialist training or Specialist Registration via the CESR pathway.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide clinical input (outpatient clinics and theatre sessions) to the chronic pain management service (detailed timetable to be agreed with the postholder).

Our two main hospital sites are The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. This job will be predominantly based at the Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post will facilitate the provision of care to chronic pain patients with some anaesthetic sessions.ÌýÌýThe work split will be approximately 6.5 sessions for chronic pain management and 3.5 sessions for anaesthetics.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Post Graduate Qualification in Anaesthesia
  • Post Graduate Qualification in Pain Management (Clinical Experience and training equivalent to Advanced Specialist Training in Pain Management)
  • Experience in interventional pain procedures
  • Understanding of and experience in undertaking Quality Improvement activities
Desirable criteria
  • A higher qualification in Pain management e.g. M.D. or MSc.
  • Participation in a management role
  • Experience in basic research methods
  • Completion of a course or certificate related to teaching / training
