You will help directly with supporting patients moving to different parts of the hospital, often when they are at their most vulnerable. You’re reassuring and friendly demeanour can really make a difference to the patient experience.

It’s not simply transporting patients between different wards and departments, it also includes a variety of other duties such as sample collection, the transportation of linen, removal of domestic and clinical waste, postal services, security duties and driving duties.Ìý

It's a busy and active role and extremely satisfying and fulfilling. We are a 24/7, 365 days a year service, completing up to 15,000 tasks a month.
You will join aÌý dedicated and professional portering team that work hard together to deliver an efficient service that we are extremely proud of.Ìý

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive front-line support service to all wards and departments within the Trust. You will be responsible for supporting patient transfers, carrying out all general portering duties, occasional ad hoc driving requests and assisting with security issues as required.

You will demonstrate a consistently high standard of professionalism, must be flexible in approach and able to use own initiative to plan workload and resolve problems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Communicate verbally with the portering supervisor and colleagues by phone and radio and through written procedures, ensuring an effective exchange of information regarding Portering tasks and service needs.
  • Communicate with a range of clinical and non-clinical staff, patients, and visitors to understand patient needs and other requirements regarding portering duties.Ìý
  • Identify and act upon any potential risks or hazards within the working environment.
  • Assist Emergency Department colleagues in the event of a contamination incident, including erecting the decontamination tent.
  • Maintain and develop own competence for the Portering role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent
  • Full UK manual driving licence
Desirable criteria
  • Health and Safety training
  • Manual handling training
  • First aid training

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Proven ability to work without supervision
  • Customer service experience
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a hospital environment
  • Previous portering experience
