Job overview

The post is for an Oncoplastic Fellow within Breast Surgery for 12 months.

This is for a fixed term contract in the Musculoskeletal and Specialist Surgery (MSS) Clinical Management Group (CMG)Ìý with the majority of the Breast Surgery services being based at the Glenfield Hospital within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The post holder will be working alongside the current members of the Breast Surgery team offering Specialist Breast Surgery within UHL, including Breast Reconstruction, based at the Glenfield Hospital. This post is intended for a surgeon who is already competent in breast surgery but wishes to gain experience and competence with a range of oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques. The post is suitable for a candidate who is close to applying for specialist registration and the consultant body have experience of supporting candidates with the CESR process. The previous two post holders moved directly from this post into locum consultant oncoplastic posts, with one writing about their experience in the 2023 ABS Yearbook:

This post involves flexible working including evenings and weekends where needed, with appropriate notice given. This will be discussed at interview with further details.

Main duties of the job

ÌýThe post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to revalidate successfully. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.

To be able to provide support when needed for the care of patients with emergency admissions or day attenders during office hours.Ìý

To be a point of escalation when the junior doctors requires senior advice.

To provide Breast Surgery services by way of outpatient clinics and outpatient procedure lists at the University Hospitals of Leicester.Ìý

ÌýTo work flexibly and cooperatively with the other consultant surgeons to maximise the utilisation of outpatient procedure lists and outpatient clinics.

ÌýTo ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.Ìý

To provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care and for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical practice.

To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust’s ‘Critical Incident Policy’, are reported in a timely manner.

ÌýMaintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department;Ìý

Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences where job plans allow.

To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs;ÌýÌý

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures;ÌýÌý

Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;ÌýÌý

Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD – CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory.Ìý

In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.Ìý

The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers – this might include investigations of incidents or complaints.

The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.Ìý

The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCS or equivalent (General Surgery or Plastics)
  • Undergraduate medical degree
Desirable criteria
  • Related MSc, MD or other higher degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Oncoplastic Breast Surgery as a chosen career
  • Senior Registrar/Specialist Registrar experience or equivalent in breast surgery
  • Show career progression, by posts obtained during training to date
  • Ability to record accurate and complete medical notes
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship training in Breast surgery
  • Experience in management and service development

Communication & Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Insight into personal limitations and willingness to accept appropriate criticism
  • Ability to work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team
  • Potential to cope with stressful situations and undertake responsibility
Desirable criteria
