Job overview

This RCF post is a replacement for an ST3 and above Specialty Registrar position.

The RCF/registrar will work in the Leicester Centre for Rheumatic Diseases , currently at Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) and will be required to carry out the same duties as a registrar in full training. This is not an official training post, but the appointee will be entitled to attend the training meetings within the department.

The RCF/registrar will work within a team of 4 registrars to provide a clinical service within the district of Leicestershire. Duties will include out patient and in patient care, ward cover and full involvement with the on call rota. There may also be duties in terms of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level depending on the experience of the appointee.

The appointee will hold the full MRCP and will have had experience of clinical rheumatology at CT2 level or equivalent. Clinical expertise in rheumatology, and good communication skills will be required.

Main duties of the job

The specialty registrar will at present work in rheumatology clinics and on medical wards to see rheumatology patients. They will also participate in doing rheumatology on-call after 5pm on weekdays and at weekends as per existing rota arrangements. Out of hours service is paid in accordance with the agreed rota agreements and service needs and may be updated from time to time.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Research

Good opportunities for clinical and epidemiological research exist in Leicester. Registrars will participate in research projects with a view to presenting such work at meetings of Learned Societies and followed by publications. A full research day is included in the weekly time table.

Clinical Governance

An understanding of clinical governance issues is an essential part of training. The trainee will be expected to undertake and present audit projects, and to be involved in clinical governance activities.

Postgraduate Meetings

There are regular Postgraduate meetings held in Leicester, and ‘teaching days’ are provided locally. Attendance at regional area national meetings (such as the BSR meeting) will be encouraged.

Teaching

The teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students is also an essential training requirement. All trainees will be expected to take part in ward based clinical teaching, as well as formal lecture based teaching.

Management Training

Attendance at appropriate courses will be encouraged.

Assessment

A meeting with the educational supervisor will be arranged soon after the trainees are appointed and then at least six monthly. Any problems should be discussed as quickly as possible.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 2 years’ experience of working IMT level either in the UK or abroad

Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues. Essential criteria
  • Ability to manage applicants own time and work effectively, understanding of role. Possessing a high degree of motivation and personal self-discipline. BLS Qualified

Physical skills

  • Regular participation of the On-Call Triage Rota
