Thank you for your interest in joining the dynamic team at The Royal Marsden's Blood Sciences department. This opportunity offers a chance to contribute to ground-breaking cancer care at Europe's largest comprehensive cancer centre, renowned for its commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

We are currently seeking a qualified Biomedical Scientist for a band 6 position in our Biochemistry Department, based at our Chelsea site. While the primary location is Chelsea, rotations to our Sutton (Surrey) site and Cavendish Square (Central London) site may be required to meet service needs. This post does not offer the opportunity to participate in the Out of Hours service based at our Sutton site. The Biochemistry lab at Chelsea currently operates between 08:00-17:00 Monday-Fridays only.
Our primary platform comprises of Ortho Vitros analysers. While previous experience with these analysers is beneficial, it is not essential as you will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in Blood Sciences with full training provided.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out analytical work. The post holder will rotate through all sections of the department. The key working relationships will be with staff in Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion and Haematology, but the post holder will be expected to liaise with staff throughout Pathology and the Trust.

To be able to work within all areas of the department as follows:Ìý

Laboratory Duties

• Ìý ÌýTo receive, centrifuge and record all samples in accordance to local SOPs including those being referred to other laboratories.
• Ìý ÌýTo process all samples that require further action, informing users when required in accordance with SOP.Ìý
• Ìý ÌýTo ensure knowledge of all instrumentation across the different sections in Biochemistry is up to date.
• Ìý ÌýTo be competent to operate the laboratory equipment to deliver an excellent analytical service.
• Ìý ÌýTo prepare analysers: daily start up, routine maintenance, run controls, check within limits and action appropriately.
• Ìý ÌýTo monitor analysers continuously throughout the day, running control samples as necessary.
• Ìý ÌýTo load specimens into racks, selecting appropriate tests on analyser software and start analyser processing

Education

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
  • HCPC Registration
  • IBMS accredited degree
  • Evidence of HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of post registration study
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Previous out of hours experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a diagnostic laboratory
  • Able to work to deadlines
  • Able to understand / follow SOPs
  • Full understanding of EQA & IQC and their implications
  • Demonstrable experience of reviewing and technically authorising patient results
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of analyser troubleshooting and situational problem solving
