Are you a Registered Mental Health Nurse with an interest in working in an acute physical health setting? ÌýThe Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a leading Cancer Hospital in London and we have an exciting opportunity within the Adult Psychological Support Service, which includes Liaison Psychiatry.Ìý

We are looking for a 1.0wte, AfC band 7 Psychiatric Liaison Nurse. ÌýThe role is based across our Chelsea and Sutton hospitals and receives inner London weighting. ÌýSubstantial and current clinical experience working in Liaison Psychiatry is essential so that you are confident in autonomously assessing and managing risk; a non-medical prescribing qualification would be an advantage. ÌýYou will work closely with 2 MHANPs and full-time psychiatry cover.

You will be joining a supportive and friendly wider team of qualified and trainee staff from across a range of psychological therapy backgrounds. ÌýThere are excellent CPD opportunities. Ìý

Main duties of the job

The principal objective of this post-holder is to provide specialist professional and clinical expertise in the care of adult cancer patients with mental health needs that arise or are exacerbated because of their cancer diagnosis, treatment or prognosis, with the aim of supporting equity of outcome with their peers.Ìý

1. Ìý ÌýTo screen and triage referrals into the service, assessing and advising on further action depending on eligibility for the service and urgency.Ìý
2. Ìý ÌýTo undertake mental health nursing assessments of oncology patients in the inpatient and day patient settings, when referred to Adult Psychological Support Service. Ìý
3. Ìý ÌýTo assess and manage risk related to mental health, challenging behaviours and mental capacity, acting as an advocate for patients, staff and families where required. This will include assessing the requirement for 1:1 mental health nurse provision as appropriate and liaison with community mental health teams or inpatient psychiatric settings to facilitate more streamlined transfers. Ìý
4. Ìý ÌýProviding on hand clinical support with inpatient urgent situations, where patients demonstrate psychiatric, psychological, social and behavioural needs.
5. Ìý ÌýSupport with the development of psychological and psychiatric care plans for inpatients with mental health needs or challenging behaviours, ensuring use of local tools and close work with relevant departments, including Safeguarding, Clinical Site Practitioners and ward teams as necessary. This will include completing documentation relating to patient care and ensuring that staff maintain and update documentation as changes occur according to Trust policy. Ìý
6. Ìý ÌýTo attend weekly service Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting as well as case conferences, reviews and other meetings when appropriate. To ensure that reports and other correspondence are entered into the relevant notes and communicated to the other professionals as soon as possible.Ìý

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse RN 3
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse RN 1
  • Physical Assessment Skills qualification
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Masters in Mental Health Nursing or other related subject or a willingness to work towards one

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in working in liaison psychiatry with complex medical patients
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Experience of working in Physical Health Settings
  • Experience of managing complex emotional situations where there is a high level of distress
  • Experience of working autonomously
