Job overview

Applications are invited for听 Consultant Anaesthetist post based at Northwick Park/St Mark鈥檚, Central Middlesex and Ealing Hospitals, part of the London North West University Healthcare Trust.

Our priority is to appoint the best possible consultant anaesthetists to join our friendly, collegiate and hard-working department. However we are also looking for candidates who will be able to bring new skills, techniques and ideas to our department. Candidates should have proven capabilities in their chosen area of expertise, either through higher training or clinical posts.

The Trust is a regional centre for Head and Neck/Maxillofacial surgery, gastrointestinal surgery (St Marks Hospital) and vascular surgery as well as听 vascular, orthopaedic, trauma, urological and obstetrics. The post-holders will join teams providing elective and emergency anaesthetic care to these surgical specialties.

They will also become part of the group of over 70 consultant anaesthetists/intensivists. Appointees to these vacancies will need to be willing and able to contribute to a future shared vision with colleagues across all hospitals in London.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC or within 6 months of being included onto the Specialist Register. (CCT/CESR)

Main duties of the job

Out of hours cover is provided with a 1:12 on-call rota, which includes both first and second on-call responsibilities and provides cover for the general emergency theatres (Northwick Park and Ealing sites) as well as obstetric services and the surgical recovery areas. The successful appointees will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit. They will be required to undertake management duties and work in a multidisciplinary team.

There are acute hospital services at Central Middlesex, Ealing, Northwick Park and St Mark鈥檚 Hospitals. The service provided by the Anaesthetic and Critical Care Departments across all sites has now become fully integrated, a collaboration which typifies the cross-site and collaborative culture within the Directorate.

Person specification

Knowledge and Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Has the required knowledge, skills, experience and ability to participate in general anaesthetic consultant on call rota (NPH and EH sites).
  • Experience in the management of high-risk patients.
  • Evidence of Stage 3, SIA or equivalent training in obstetric anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia and anaesthesia for airway surgery/shared airway to cover NPH on calls.
  • Recent experience and capabilities to manage the critically ill child to at least stage 3 (or equivalent) standard.
Desirable criteria
  • NHS experience within the last 3 years.
  • Additional experience in perioperative care e.g. prehabilitation or preoperative assessment.
  • Experience as a Locum Consultant at an acute hospital.

Management and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understands the managerial, administrative and organisational roles expected of consultants as evidenced by Stage 3 or equivalent training in Management and Professional and Regulatory Requirements.
  • Understands the principles of quality improvement (QI) and audit as evidenced by Stage 3 training or equivalent in Safety and QI.
  • Leadership skills. 路 Knowledge of finance/budgets. 路 Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively. Ability to motivate and develop the multidisciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification or current study towards management qualification.
  • Evidence of service audit, design or change management

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • FRCA (or equivalent).
  • Completion of specialist training program in anaesthesia or equivalent, including Stage 3 paediatric anaesthesia (or equivalent).
  • SIA/fellowship or equivalent in anaesthesia for relevant area of expertise according to job plan: o Paediatrics (paediatric job plan) o Regional (regional job plans) o Obstetrics (obstetric job plan ) o Colorectal/major surgery (colorectal job plan)
Desirable criteria
  • Formal educational qualifications or accreditation
  • CPET qualifications

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Candidate should be on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (CCT/CESR) or, if UK trainee, within 6 months of CCT at time of interview.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Stage 3, SIA or equivalent level of training in Education and Training (including has met requirements to be a clinical supervisor). 路 Experience in teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff. 路 Commitment to work as educational supervisor.
Desirable criteria
  • Further experience in medical education (e.g. simulation instructor, educational qualifications)
