Job overview
The neurology department provides general neurological care to Kingston and the surrounding area.Ìý The mainstay of our work is out-patient clinics in general neurology, as well as specialist clinics in movement disorders, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), headache and functional neurological disorders and nurse-led clinics in MS, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.Ìý We offer day unit treatments for MS (currently Natalizumab).Ìý We also provide a ward liaison service (in-reach) for in-patients.Ìý Elective lumbar punctures are performed on the neurology day unit at St George’s Hospital.
ÌýThe neurophysiology service was established in 2016.Ìý We offer EMG/nerve conduction studies including single fibre EMG, SSEPs and EEG and VEPs.Ìý We have access to CT and MRI scans, with visiting neuroradiologists from St George’s contributing to reporting.Ìý DaTscans are offered by the nuclear medicine department.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will provide movement disorders clinics and supervise the Parkinson’s specialist nurse.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration (or eligibility to obtain).
- MRCP/FRCP or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC specialist register (Neurology) via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
Desirable criteria
- MD/PhD.
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of diagnosing and managing and movement disorders including complex Parkinson’s disease
- Up to date clinical experience in general neurology.
- Able to practice independently in botulinum toxin use for dystonia.
Management Skills
Desirable criteria
- Attended management training course
- Knowledge of finance/budgets.
Experience in Training, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable commitment and ability to teach and train undergraduates and junior doctors.
- Experience of clinical audit
- Experience of clinical research in movement disorders.
Desirable criteria
- Completed ‘Train the Trainers’ course.
- Relevant research articles in peer-reviewed journals
Personal Qualities
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate leadership skills within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to motivate staff, to facilitate appropriate changes in clinical practice and to work as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enthusiasm and approachability.
