Job overview

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic Advanced Orthoptist who is motivated to inspire the next generation of Orthoptists. The post of Lead Clinical Tutor will continue to maximise the good clinical learning environment and opportunities for students attending as undergraduates and MSc (pre-registration) across twenty six weeks a year.Ìý

Along with a multi-disciplinary team of twenty seven members the Orthoptic Service delivers both formal and informal education and training internally and externally.Ìý

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to undertake a significant amount of clinical teaching and support the education lead in developing student timetables, conducting inductions, delivering formative and summative student feedback as required. A commitment to attain a recognised teaching qualification will be supported.

The post holder will directly provide orthoptic and allied services, some of which require particular expertise and ability, and all other tasks mutually agreed with the Head and Education lead. The orthoptist will have substantial clinical experience, be able to practice independently.Ìý

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A detailed job description andÌý specification is attached. In addition to having extensive clinical experience, lead clinical tutor duties will include:Ìý

  • Ability to demonstrate, teach and supervise where appropriate a range of medical and non-medical personnel from student Orthoptics to a range of healthcare professionals based within the trust.Ìý
  • Be competence in teaching in both informal and formal settings, able to work in conjunction with others in developing a range of training opportunities.
  • Support, maintain and maximise good clinical learning environment opportunities for Orthoptic students.
  • Lead clinical placements for Orthoptic students in-line with placement objectives.
  • Undertake induction and conduct in person formative and summative assessments.
  • Offer advice and support for new to role clinical supervisors.
  • Liaise with other sites and sub-specialities to provide in advance student timetables with designated supervisors.
  • Maintain and produce tutorial material to meet the needs of the clinical placement.
  • Provide compensate care to learners attending the department whilst on placements.
  • Maintain database and records of clinical placement attendance.
  • Deliver the highest possible standards of working relationships and be able to work autonomously, making decisions based on expertise within an inter-professional or multi-disciplinary framework at all levels internally and with appropriate HEI’s.
  • Act as a role model for learners and demonstrate what good practice looks like.
  • Maintain confidentiality to staff and students when discussing placement / education within clinical settings trust wide.
  • Support student with Freedom to Speak Up. Ensure correct procedures are carried out.

Person specification

Education & qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Orthoptic qualification recognised by HCPC
  • Registration as an Orthoptist with HCPC
  • BIOS clinical tutors course
Desirable criteria
  • Higher qualification or equivalent experience
  • Formal teaching qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive clinical experience in Orthoptics working in single handed clinics
  • Extensive experience of diagnosis and management of complex ocular disorders
  • Experience of providing Orthoptic student supervision
  • Experience of developing teaching resources to support HCP and Orthoptists
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in providing formative and summative feedback to learners

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of CPD and reflective practice
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of audit and or research to improve learning

Skills & abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
