The nursing team is offering an opportunity for an experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic senior band 5 nurse to join the team. The applicant must be a registered nurse with significant experience as a nurse in the following clinical areas: interventional radiology (general or neuro) and or cardiac Cath lab. Kings College Hospital has got an established close link with London Health Education Institutes including Kings College London and South Bank University which offer various options for post registration study

Main duties of the job

The post holder must be an NMC registered RN (level 1) and is therefore bound by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors. Particular emphasis is put at Kings on the need to ensure that all staff recognize their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate commitment to their own personal development and show a keen interest in the future development of the nursing profession within neuro and interventional radiology. The department will offer to expand your clinical expertise in scrubbing and circulating role for patients undergoing interventional procedure. This will also include recovering patients undergoing procedures under GA or sedation, and nursing support within other imaging areas including ultrasound, CT, general x-ray and MRI. The radiology nursing team also has a very well established nurse led pre-assessment service for our day case patients, which part of the senior nurse role. The department offers an out of hour’s on-call service that all nurses are required to be part of. Additionally you will be expected to take on the role of shift coordinator on a day-to-day basis which is a key element of the senior nurse role and therefore the applicant must be in possession of good clinical leadership skills and is able to act as a role model who will provide direction and support to junior staff.Ìý

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to this at all times.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of any patients receiving treatment in the neuroradiology, interventional radiology, and diagnostic imaging.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients requiring diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures on an on-going basis.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Co-ordinate the care given by all other members of the clinical team.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information about the patients’ condition, promptly report changes and instigate remedial action as appropriate.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients and their relatives.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To ensure that accurate records are maintained reflecting both changes in the patient’s condition and the treatment delivered.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To ensure that patients and their relatives are updated regularly with accurate information, and information is presented in a way that they understand.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To ensure that Clinical Guidelines are implemented and to be actively involved in auditing practice in conjunction with Line Manager and practice development staff.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To ensure that practice is evidence based and with support assist in the development of policies and protocols within the clinical area.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To uphold high standards of nursing care, in accordance to existing policies, standards and guidelines.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To support the Radiology Sister/Lead Nurse in processes of continuous quality improvement, formally evaluating standards of care and assisting in the implementation of changes in the light of such findings.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To contribute to the health education of patients and their families, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate advice and support to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To actively support the implementation of the Trust nursing strategy and uphold the ethos of the local philosophy.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To assist with the administration of intravenous injections of radiopharmaceuticals and other agents for diagnosis and support in the management of stock levels as required.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To rotate to other clinical areas within the department as required or as identified as a personal and or professional development need in the appraisal process

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To conduct or effectively delegate departmental audits and ensure that key performance indicators are met and escalate issues appropriately i.e. MEG, Cleaning, Patient Experience, Local Safety Checklist

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To uphold high standards of nursing care while ensuring patient safety at all times and appropriately challenging bad practice when observed ensuring it is corrected and documented accordingly.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To identify and lead a service improvement project engaging staff participation and delegation, and routinely assess project’s effectiveness

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To organise and perform nurse led pre–assessment clinics utilising the hospital clinical system to order and obtain results. Completing the radiology report on the hospital documentation system on informing the referrers of the suitability of the patient for day care and/or arranging admission.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To actively participate in the nurse liaison role to support prompt vetting, escalating any issues and improve patient flow.

Education and Research:

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To act as a mentor to junior staff members, responsible for the orientation, supervision and ongoing development of junior and student nurses, in conjunction with Line Manager and Practice Development staff.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To act as practice supervisor/assessor responsible for completing competency documents for staff and pre- registration student nurses within agreed timeframes.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To act as a mentor/assessor to post registration students undertaking further education as requested, ensuring a positive learning experience and facilitating the development of their clinical skills.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To contribute to the wider educational activities within the division – ensuring attendance at and contributing to the delivery of educational activities within the division.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To promote and encourage the application of research and of evidence based practice

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area as appropriate.

Management:

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To manage the clinical workload effectively, ensuring care is prioritised appropriately.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To contribute positively towards the delivery of a cost effective service, adjusting staffing levels to meet demand and assisting the ward manager to keep within agreed resources.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To assist with the ongoing organisation of the department, co-ordinating the activities of the clinical area.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To liaise with Medical Personnel and Bed Managers to ensure optimal bed usage at all times, facilitating timely admission and discharge of patients.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To act as a team leader to an identified group of staff, monitoring and documenting the development of their clinical skills.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To develop own skills in recruitment and retention, sickness management and performance management as determined by line manager.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To actively support the process of risk management – ensure incidents are reported appropriately and helping identify ways of preventing errors and accidents to both patients and staff.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To make a positive contribution to the development of the service within the relevant clinical areas and act as a positive influence others in the management of change.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To actively promote customer care, assisting in resolving local (informal) complaints and supporting the ward manager to investigate formal problems.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To assist with the monitoring of stock levels of clinical stores and technical equipment, resolving any shortfall as appropriate.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To maintain standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the clinical area, auctioning remedy as appropriate and reporting deficits to line manager and or lead nurse, as appropriate.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To communicate varied and complicated information (verbally and in writing) in a way that is understood and gets the important facts across.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To carry the department Wi-Fi and/or telephone as required, resolving local problems/ conflicts, keeping managers/others informed and maintaining positive team dynamics across the care group at all times.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To rotate to different areas in the department with the clinical needs of the service, including general Interventional, neuro radiology and nuclear medicine.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To ensure own educational commitment is sufficient to maintain NMC revalidation requirements and to ensure own mandatory training certificates are current, in liaison with Line Manager and PDN.
