An exciting opportunity has opened for the role of the Maternity Support Worker within our maternity departments atÌý Princess Royal University Hospital. The role involves supporting the midwifery teams to provide individualised care to birthing people and babies throughout their maternity journey and facilitating a positive experience.
We are looking for applicants with experience in working in the maternity care setting who can work independently undertaking allocated tasks whilst remaining under the direct/indirect supervision of a registered midwife.Ìý
Please only apply to this role if you are a qualified Maternity Support Worker and have completed the Level 3 Maternity Support Worker qualification or Maternity Support worker Foundation degree pathway.Ìý
Candidates would be supported to undertake the specific competencies relating to their role including the Care Certificate and competencies in the skills passports.Ìý
The post holder may be rotated within the maternity departments and will be expected to work pro rota on shift pattern, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
Suitable candidates for the role have excellent communications skills, caring, sensitive and friendly, have the ability to work within the multidisciplinary team, have an awareness to priorities, deals with workload, adapts to changing requirements, and have a positive approach to work.
Main duties of the job
Ìý• Ìý ÌýTo assist under supervision in the delivery of fundamental nursing and midwifery care in liaison with the multidisciplinary team.
• Ìý ÌýTo contribute to the implementation and progression of a range of women/birthing people treatment and care programmes as delegated by a registered healthcare practitioner, reporting back on progress. Ìý
• Ìý ÌýTo work in partnership with midwives and members of the multi-disciplinary team in providing clinical, practical, social, and environmental support as necessary within the hospital and community setting.
• Ìý ÌýTo assist with clinical duties to ensure the effective running of the ward/department.
• Ìý ÌýProvide day to day supervision and co-ordination of junior staff acting both as a leader and role model for care assistants (band 2).
• Ìý ÌýThe post holder will provide person centred care to the birthing person/families by providing a positive experience and developing a positive relationship to understand their care needs.
• Ìý ÌýIn-house induction and mandatory training updates would be provided annually. Our specialist infant feeding team will provide specific training relating to the care of the birthing people and baby including infant feeding support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical ResponsibilitiesÌý
• Ìý ÌýCommunity antenatal clinic – antenatal classes – postnatal home visits.
• Ìý ÌýTo prepare and maintain the clinical environment, ensuring stock is available for all clinical sessions.Ìý
• Ìý ÌýTo meet, greet and orientate women/birthing people to the clinical area when they attend the antenatal clinic. Ìý
• Ìý ÌýTo manage own caseload of allocated task under the supervision of the midwife.Ìý
• Ìý ÌýAbility to support the midwife with home visits to complete postnatal care of the women/birthing people and baby independently.Ìý
Administrative and clerical duties Ìý
• Ìý ÌýTo assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management, photocopying, transporting of equipment/data/ paperwork to other departments, booking women/birthing people transport and sending referrals.
• Ìý ÌýTo provide clear and effective information and communication, both verbally and in writing. Promptly referring enquiries to the relevant person.
Education and TrainingÌý
• Ìý ÌýTo be able to identify and support your own development needs, completing a competency document and learning objectives within 6 months of commencing the role of the maternity support worker.Ìý
• Ìý ÌýTo ensure own attendance at mandatory study days and training (BLS, manual handling etc.) as required by ward/departmental manager/PDMÌý
• Ìý ÌýTo update skills and knowledge as required by the Trust.
LeadershipÌý
• Ìý ÌýTo adhere to, and work within the National Code of Conduct for clinical support workers at King’s College HospitalÌý
• Ìý ÌýTo manage an agreed workload with supervision and support from colleagues and senior staffÌý
• Ìý ÌýTo work within and support the multidisciplinary team, contributing ideas toward future developments.

Education
Essential criteria
- Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English, or GCSE grade A-C or 4-9, O-level grade A-C or have a NARIC/ENIC which compares the qualification to UK GCSE.
- Maternity Support Worker Foundation degree or Evidence of previous further education in maternity.
- Care Certificate
- NVQ level 3 in Health Care or equivalent.
Skills/Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within maternity or similar setting
- Able to talk to people about sensitive issues in a supportive manner but also challenge others assertively where necessary.
- Work well with other members of the team including communicating effectively, being kind and considerate, reliable and enthusiastic.
