Job overview
We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Band 8aÌý Superintendent Sonographer to join our friendly and well-supported team.
This role is required to oversee the delivery of the general ultrasound service (including general, MSK, gynaecology and paediatric scanning) at St. George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The service is delivered across 4 sites and 25 ultrasound rooms with a team of approximately 25 sonographers.Ìý Though the main remit of this role is on service delivery the post holder will also be expected to perform complex examinations whilst maintaining a skilled workforce including training that workforce.Ìý
The post holder must be flexible, adaptable to change, prepared to embrace workforce developments and to contribute to an effective and efficient service, delivered through the highest standards of safe, kind and compassionate care.
Main duties of the job
- Based at St George’s Hospital, the post holder will also oversee the ultrasound departments at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton, the Nelson Health Centre and St. John’s Therapy Centre and involves the day-to-day operational running of the ultrasound service with a 30% clinical and 70% management split.
- The post holder will be responsible for the professional leadershipÌý Ìý Ìý Ìý and line management of all sonographers working within the service.
- The post holder will work as a specialised sonographer demonstrating a high level of clinical competence and understanding across a wide range of examinations, including a variety of complex clinical presentations. They will be able to demonstrate a high level of technical expertise whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care.Ìý
- ÌýResponsible for developing & implementing departmental clinical & procedural protocols and policies in consultation with the relevant consultants and senior managers.
- Lead on the clinical governance and risk management programme for ultrasound department.
- To assist with the management of the clinical workload within the department restructuring the service to respond to long and short-term demands.Ìý Ensuring the daily workload is organised in line with clinical priorities. Rearranging work lists in case of equipment failure and being responsive to the inconvenience caused to patients.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) in diagnostic radiography or equivalent
- HPCP or RCT registered
- Diploma in medical ultrasound
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with an up to date CPD portfolio
Desirable criteria
- Advanced clinical practice qualification
- Postgraduate qualification in health management or leadership
- Postgraduate qualification in teaching or research
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ultrasound experience in an acute setting
- In depth postgraduate experience in general/MSK/gynaecological scanning
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to inspire a team
- Experience in the development, training and up-skilling of staff including students
- Evidence of leading on audit and quality assurance programmes
- Experience in research and the ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
- Paediatric ultrasound experience
- Interventional experience such as MSK injections or FNAs
- Evidence of delivering a training programme
- Experience in leading on change management/service transformation
Skills
Essential criteria
- Exceptional leadership, interpersonal and team-building skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders from diverse backgrounds
