Job overview

To co-operate with all Pharmaceutical Department Staff in providing and developing an efficient and comprehensive Pharmaceutical Service for patients of the Liverpool Hospitals NHS Trust.
To provide and manage clinical technical service to the wards including taking comprehensive medication histories, counselling and educating patients and other healthcare professionals, inspection of patients鈥 own drugs (POD) for reuse and to听provide a cost-effective one-stop dispensing service.
To train and develop other technicians in the systems used on the POD wards and to develop these systems into other areas of the Trust. To contribute to the review of existing systems used on the POD wards and implementation of new procedures.
To carry out pharmaceutical technicians duties of a routine nature under the direction of a pharmacist and the supervision of a pharmacist or senior pharmacy technician.

Main duties of the job

1) To provide a clinical technical service to the POD wards, including the taking of comprehensive medication histories and to provide a cost-effective 鈥渙ne-stop鈥 dispensing service involving accuracy checking patients鈥 own drugs and assessing their suitability for reuse.

2) To provide a cost-effective 鈥渙ne-stop鈥 dispensing service to wards, involving accuracy checking patients鈥 own drugs and assessing their suitability for use, arranging re-supplies of patients鈥 drugs, liaising with G.P.s, nursing homes and ward听staff, assessing patient concordance and providing counselling and education where necessary.

3) To provide a 鈥渢opping up鈥 service on wards for individual patient drug supplies under the direction of the Dispensary Manager or Senior Technicians and in accordance with procedures.

4) To support the clinical pharmacists on POD wards in the provision of听
complete pharmaceutical care for patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1) To liaise with GPs, nursing homes, doctors, ward staff and other healthcare professionals to provide complete pharmaceutical care for patients.

2) To interpret medical notes and test results, identify pharmaceutical and clinical problems and refer to the appropriate medical staff or clinical pharmacist.

3) To assess patient concordance, identify patients requiring compliance aids and arrange provision of the necessary aids in both primary and secondary care.

4) To develop, implement and manage a training package for technical staff in the systems used on POD wards and to assess, train and supervise other technical staff in the systems used on POD wards to ensure optimal and continuous service, adherence to procedures and safe systems of work and expansion of systems to other areas of the Trust.

5) To participate in personal development review and appraise and perform personal development reviews on other staff members.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Accredited Technical Accuracy Checking Qualification
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and BTEC Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences with appropriate underpinning knowledge
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience with the Electronic Medicines Management systems, including file maintenance, standard and ad-hoc reporting
