Applications are invited for the position of Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Royal Site).

These roles are pivotal to the delivery and expansion of high-quality care at Royal Liverpool Hospital and are a rare opportunity for inspiring individuals to be instrumental in shaping the future of our service.

These posts form one of a team of 20 Consultants in Emergency Medicine and attracts 10 programmed activities per week. There may be the opportunity to increase this by negotiation and any special interests will be considered.

Full registration with licence to practice and eligibility for specialist register in Emergency Medicine within 6 months of interview is essential.Ìý

Main duties of the job

Specific duties of the role include:

  • Reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies as appropriate.
  • Referral of patients to other specialities, transfer of patients for admission to assessment units, to other hospitals within or outside the Trust, referral as outpatient or back to the community.
  • Provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients.
  • Be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring that the Clinical Quality Indicators to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.
  • Work in conjunction with the nurse co-ordinator and medical and surgical colleagues to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between the clinical team; timely intervention and safe care to maintain optimal patient flow.
  • When colleagues are absent alternative clinical duties may be arranged to provide appropriate cover.
  • Provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise and train the junior and speciality doctors in Emergency Medicine; advanced nurse practitioners and emergency nurse practitioners.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB (or equivalent)
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • FCEM or equivalent.
  • APLS/ATLS/ALS provider
  • CCT Holder Or equivalent training) or within 6 months of attaining one at time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • ETC provider Instructor status.

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC and license to practice
  • Eligible for specialist register in Emergency Medicine within 6 months of interview.

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience and training equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Emergency Medicine.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of all emergency department presentations.
Desirable criteria
  • Level 1 or above training and experience in ultrasound scanning.

Teaching & Training Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of teaching Medical students, junior doctors, and or Advanced/Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
  • Commitment to continuing Medical Education and Professional Development
  • Extensive experience and interest in teaching.
Desirable criteria
  • Organisation of (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) teaching programmes.
  • Experience in training in simulation events
  • Level 1 trainer in ultrasound scanning
  • . Relevant recognised teaching qualification

Clinical Governance Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of NHS management structures and the principles of Clinical Governance.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the CQC five areas of care and its relevance to clinical governance.
  • Awareness of Clinical Governance and its importance in the management of the emergency department.
Desirable criteria
  • Able to arrange clinical governance events and monitor there effectiveness.

Management Experience

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to participate in management activities.
  • Understanding of financial arrangements in the NHS.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload.
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
  • Ability to take a whole systems approach to Emergency Department working.
  • Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of management training. Experience of managing change.
