Full time - 37.5 hours per week (Your paid hours will be 37.5 hours per week. These will be worked during departmental opening hours 8am 鈥 9pm Monday to Friday, 9am 鈥 6pm weekends (currently 1 in 6). In addition you will support the current department rota for working 9am-5pm Bank Holidays (usually 1-2 per year) and providing on-call service (averaging 1-2 weeks and 1 weekend per year). Working patterns are subject to change to meet patient need and service shortages.)

Job overview

Surgery and peri-operative medicine

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive clinical pharmacist to join our peri-operative and surgical pharmacy team.

You will be working across the surgical division providing expertise to both patients and healthcare professionals across a range of surgical specialties such as urology, colorectal, trauma and orthopaedics and upper GI.

The role will involve covering in-patient areas, pre-op and post-op clinics, working with a team of experienced pharmacists, surgeons, anaesthetists and specialist nurses. Helping to manage perioperative care and optimisation for our elective and emergency surgical patients.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with the pharmacy, nursing, medical and management teams, you will lead on delivering services to surgical teams to improve how patient鈥檚 medicines are optimised.

鈥 Reviewing patients with acute and complex needs as part of the multi-disciplinary ward round;

鈥 Developing, implementing and monitoring prescribing guidelines;

鈥 Financial monitoring of drug expenditure;

鈥upporting the training and education of pharmacists, Medicines Management 听听听听Technicians (MMTs) and other healthcare staff;

鈥 Promoting the medicines optimisation and medicines safety agenda;

鈥 Participating in other clinical activities such as clinical audit and practice research;

鈥 Collaborating with other system organisations, including Wirral CCG, MLCSU, CWP, community pharmacy and WCHC.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Vocational Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Diploma or MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experiential learning.
  • Extensive experience as a qualified pharmacist working within a range of clinical areas.
  • Experience in delivering education and training of other staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Independent Prescribing qualification and registration as an Independent Prescriber.
  • Other post graduate qualifications ie MSc.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good all round clinical knowledge and practical skills in other areas.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and relay complex and sensitive information.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Up to date knowledge of current NHS policies, processes and structures.

Essential criteria
  • Methodical with good attention to detail.

  • Current UK driving license.

Essential criteria
  • Experience of developing evidence based clinical guidelines or preparing written work for review at drug and therapeutics committee.
  • Undertaken a lead role in audit.
  • Evidence of post graduate learning or continual CPD.
Desirable criteria
  • Published pharmaceutical research in a peer reviewed journal.
  • Line management experience.
