Job overview

The postholder will lead the delivery of a safe, efficient, reliable and cost-effective aseptic dispensing and manufacturing service, shaping strategic direction in consultation with the Team Leader - Aseptic Services.

The post holder will be the person named on the MHRA specials manufacturing license for Wirral University teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as being responsible for aseptic production and for the maintenance of this license.

The post holder will be accountable for ensuring that aseptic dispensing and manufacturing activities comply with all current statutory obligations, codes of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), the requirements of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and other appropriate professional guidelines. As part of GMP standards the post holder will be responsible for the continued review of all environmental monitoring and the identification of nay out of limit results or trends. They will develop and lead delivery of appropriate action plans to address any issues raised by this monitoring.

They will be professionally and managerially responsible for the development, management and co-ordination of staff working in the ASU, ensuring that education, training, validation and competency assessments are all relevant, up to date and of the appropriate standard.

In the role the postholder will work on their own with broad responsibility requiring little management.

Main duties of the job

Using specialist aseptic knowledge manage and develop the aseptic dispensing and manufacturing service ensuring it is safe, reliable, efficient and cost effective.听

Be responsible for ensuring that techniques and procedures used within aseptic services comply with all current statutory obligations, Good manufacturing practice

(GMP) the requirements of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency

(MHRA) and other appropriate professional guidelines.听

To be the named person responsible for production on the MHRA specials manufacturing license, participating in MHRA inspections as well as audits under EL(97)52 Aseptic Dispensing for NHS Patients. Identify and lead action planning and implementation of required changes to practice, ensuring that steps are taken to provide adequate levels of assurance that changes have been implemented successfully.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Professionally registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain
  • Masters level qualification in Pharmacy / PTQA/STP BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent Professional knowledge acquired through PTQA or equivalent experiential learning plus specialist knowledge through diploma level experience and through minimum 8 years post qualification working in aseptic services, 4 of which have been managing aseptic services and experience of large scale manufacturing.
  • Staff management with involvement in recruitment / appraisals / training / leadership / motivation / attendance management/performance management and participation in grievance or disciplinary procedures
  • Experience of training others in specialised areas of aseptic services and have developed training packages
  • Evidence of experience in planning, managing and implementing service improvements and changes across the dispensing, cytotoxic and manufacturing work streams
  • Standard operating procedure and report writing experience to meet MHRA licence requirements
  • Regular operational liaison with other senior organisation staff.
  • Experience of monitoring expenditure against a budget
  • Significant, relevant and ongoing personal CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Aseptic Preparation & Dispensing Course / training
  • NVQ Assessors qualification Level 3 (A1)
  • PTQA qualification (2 year course diploma level, 3 year course masters level)
  • Experience of giving presentations to convey complex and sensitive issues
  • Significant experience in project management including major change projects
  • Experience of developing performance metrics and dashboards to demonstrate service delivery

  • Ability to plan and organise Aseptic Services and staffing (across the cytotoxic, dispensing and manufacturing work steams) and to adjust plans in response to changing circumstances to ensure timely service provision to Trust and external customers
  • Systematic and open approach to new initiatives across all aspects of the service. Proposes change, considers and communicates potential effect on other disciplines / areas
