Job overview
We have an opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced Anatomical Pathology Technician (Band 5) to join our busy mortuary service. The mortuary service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital includes the main mortuary at Arrowe Park Hospital and a Body store at Clatterbridge Hospital. The mortuary performs approximately 350 post mortem examinations per year and is also a public mortuary for the Wirral. The mortuary has recently undergone a full refurbishment including replacement of all fridge banks as well as a fully refurbished post-mortem examination room.
As part of this role the successful candidate will assisting Medical Pathologists in the evisceration of bodies during post-mortem examination. The other main elements of the role are the receipt of bodies from the hospital and community, release of bodies to the funeral directors and assisting in the viewing of a deceased by the relatives.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role include:
- Evisceration of bodies during post-mortem examination
- Removal of brains for organ donation
- Receipt of bodies from the hospital and community
- Release of bodies to the funeral directors
- Assisting relatives in the identification and viewing of a deceased
- Liaising with the bereavement services, coroner and pathologists
Applicants must be a professional self-motivated individual with proven experience of working in a busy mortuary setting. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, be a team player and have an ability to demonstrate empathy towards bereaved relatives. You will hold an RSPH Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (level 4 equivalent) or have demonstrable equivalent experience. The applicant must be able to perform as part of a team, but equally able to work unsupervised. Within this role there will be extensive contact with external agencies such as funeral directors, the coroner’s office, Merseyside Police and the Wirral Borough Council.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training
Essential criteria
- GCSE grades A-C in Maths, English and at least one Science or equivalent.
- Holds a recognised RSPH Anatomical Pathology Technology Diploma (Level 4 equivalent) qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience

Essential criteria
- Recent extensive experience in a busy adult mortuary environment.
- Experience in assisting the Consultant Pathologists with post mortem examinations, undertaking evisceration and reconstructing the deceased.
- Experienced in specialist APT techniques
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work independently using initiative and organisational skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively in highly sensitive situations with relatives of the deceased.
- Ability to undertake strenuous manual handling activities such as moving deceased patients.
- Computer literate with good key board skills and experience in using Microsoft Office applications and Laboratory Information Systems.
- Ability to interpret and accurately process data and information as required.
- Ability to follow established written standard operating procedures
- Ability to work in a team-based environment
